About National University of Uzbekistan named after Mirzo Ulugbek

The National University of Uzbekistan (NUU), located in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, was founded in 1918, and was originally known as the "People’s University". It was the first higher education institution established in Uzbekistan, and recently celebrated its centenary. It is also the largest university in the country.

The university has links with 113 renowned institutions in the United States, the UK, Russia, Korea and many other countries around the world.

The university was named after astronomer, sultan and mathematician, Mirzo Ulugbek. Although it was destroyed, the underground section of his Observatory stands today in nearby Samarkand for students to visit.

Courses are offered from bachelor level, to master and doctorate levels. There are 14 faculties and 74 departments. Some 45 undergraduate courses are offered from a range of faculties, including biology, chemistry, economics, foreign philology, geology, history, journalism, mathematics, physics and social science.

Over 100 scientists from the university have achieved the academician title and have gone on to teach in universities around the world. One example is Zair Ibragimov, who has become a professor at California State University in the United States of America. Many scientists from the university have also gone on to receive the "Hero of Uzbekistan" award, noticed for their merit to the country.

Students are offered on-campus accommodation in hostels. Campus facilities range from a student clinic, a sports facility, libraries, shoemakers and dressmakers, a market and shops. The university also has five museums for history, manuscripts, archaeology, geology and zoology. Specifically, the zoology museum has the largest scientific collection in the country.
