About this position: The Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is comprised of 15 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre's Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science assembles an international, ambitious and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment, cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere. The Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science at the Centre supports PhD students in the finishing phase of their dissertation project through short-term finishing contracts. These employments are provided to students who have signed a doctoral thesis agreement and have already made significant progress in their doctoral thesis project. Positions have a limited duration with an option for extension. One 3-month position is available for students of the Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science through this job announcement. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration in the context of your doctoral thesis project, which means: Involvement in and finalizing of a research project as detailed in your doctoral thesis agreement Publications and presentations Involvement in project applications for third-party funding Teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement Supervision of trainees and students Meeting and consulting with your supervisor(s) on a regular basis in order to prioritize your tasks and get the necessary support to complete your dissertation successfully in time. Actively seeking support (workshops, training, coaching etc.) if necessary We expect you to make significant progress on your doctoral thesis through related milestones during the time of the short-term contract. About the Role Working closely with the Chief Investigator and the collaborative Research Team in an in-person laboratory environment, you will undertake research in the neuroscience of ageing using the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to project design and implementation, the analysis of data, and the preparation of manuscripts for publication. Actively contributing to the research project by collaborating with the Research Team to successfully deliver project milestones and Key Performance Indicators. Independently contributing to the planning and execution of research by offering new and innovative ideas, reviewing relevant literature and other sources of information, actively participating in the production of data, contributing to the writing and editing of grant applications and attending seminars, meetings and conferences. Playing a lead role in coordinating, planning and executing the project tasks required to collaborate with industry partners. Independently contributing to ethical, high quality and innovative research and evaluation through activities such as scholarship, publishing in recognised high quality journals and assisting the preparation and submission of bids for external research funding. About You You are an experienced Researcher specialising in C. elegans nematode research methodology, with a passion for inspiring the next generation of Researchers, evident through your experience successfully supervising PhD and/or undergraduate students. You will also demonstrate the following: Completion of a PhD in Neuroscience or related field (note that 3 years post PhD experience is desirable). Experience in C. elegans nematode research methodology including: 1) maintenance, 2) ageing experiments, 3) behavioural experiments (such as automated locomotion tracking), and 4) preparation of proteomics samples for western blotting and mass spectrometry experiments. Please note that experience with nematode culture and behavioural experiments is essential. Significant experience in confocal microscopy and automated image analysis using software such as IMARIS. Extensive research experience in terms of outputs in high quality publications, attraction of competitive internal/external grants as lead investigator, and presentations at a national and international level in neuroscience.
