Basic information and contact details for National Institute of Technology Silchar

The National Institute of Technology Silchar was founded in 1967 as a regional engineering college in Assam. It became a fully funded Central Government Autonomous Institution and today is one of the 31 National Institutes of Technology in India. There are five other departments: mathematics, physics, chemistry, humanities and social sciences, and management studies. Students can study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. In the 2019-2020 academic year, 24 international students studied at the institute. Their home countries included Nepal, Bangladesh, Oman, Ethiopia and Kenya. The institute is continuing to establish partnerships with higher education institutes around the world to boost the number of international students it welcomes every year. It has recently collaborated with the University of Arad in Romania and the University Jean Monnet in France. As its name suggests, the institute is located in Silchar, a city in the Indian state of Assam. It is Assam’s second largest city and is a popular Indian holiday destination. Silchar sits along the Surma River and is near the Bangladesh border. Today it functions as a trade and processing centre for the tea, rice and other agricultural industries. The city is rich with culture and history, with numerous temples and ancient architectural sites.
