The National Defence University was originally in founded in 1970 as Pakistan’s military training college. It was granted public university status in 2007 and today serves as Pakistan’s central institution for higher learning relating to matters of national security and defence. The President of Pakistan serves as the university’s chancellor, with an appointed highly ranked military official serving as its president. Located in the nation’s capital, Islamabad, the university has a rich culture and history closely intertwined with Pakistan’s own traditions and values. NDU focuses on teaching critical thinking and strategic planning across various tiers of the military and government, serving to shape future leaders. As one of the oldest military institutions in Pakistan, the university attracts a diverse student and faculty body drawn from various military, government, and academic backgrounds, both domestically and from its allied nations, creating a collaborative platform for academic exchange. The university is comprised of four major faculties: the Faculty of Security Studies, the Faculty of Contemporary Studies, the Institute for Strategic Studies, Research & Analysis, and the National War Gaming Center, each of which is divided into sub-branches. There is a range of bachelors, masters and doctoral level degree programmes on offer for military and civilian students. NDU’s main campus is located close to the Margalla Hills National Park, with facilities including a library, computer labs, lecture halls and recreational facilities. The Department of Japanese (DJP) of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Senior Instructor/Instructor in the following discipline: Japanese Studies: Open specialization, although Japanese Language Education would be preferred. The Department of Japanese is an established and distinguished scholarly community with a strong international tradition for the teaching of Japanese language and courses in Japanese Studies. In addition to its undergraduate BA programme in Japanese Studies, the department offers an undergraduate Minor Programme in Japanese Studies, as well as possible PhD supervision across the range of the department’s expertise. The department has particular strengths in Japanese Linguistics, Japanese History and Japanese Language Education. In addition to undergraduate teaching, graduate-level teaching and supervision may be possible within related areas. Qualifications Applicants must possess a Master’s degree or above in the field of Japanese Language Education or other areas of Japanese Studies from an accredited programme and experience and/or qualifications in teaching Japanese language to non-native students. Applicants should have their degree in hand upon application. Successful candidates also need to possess excellent organizational abilities, strong communication skills, and effective leadership qualities. Excellent command of Japanese language is expected. Ability to speak Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) may be an advantage, but more important are abilities to work well with a multicultural staff. Applicants with a proven academic research record and administrative experience are especially welcome. The selected candidate is expected to assume duty in August 2027. Remuneration A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP559,300 (approximately USD69,050) will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. Your personal sphere of influence: The members of the Faculty of Psychology engage in research and teaching focused on describing and explaining human experience and behavior, as well as changes therein. The Department of Cognition, Emotion, and Methods in Psychology consists of approximately 100 staff members organized into eight research units with laboratories equipped with EEG, fNIRS, VR, eye-tracking, physiology, and brain stimulation systems. Your future tasks: Supporting the transition of researchers from the Vienna Cognitive Science Hub to the Faculty of Psychology as a replacement for the previous technical support provided by a data scientist. Transfer of collected scientific data, data backup/cloud-based infrastructure for collected data and study-related products. Assisting with the organization and post-processing of collected raw data for use in ongoing projects within the context of the Study Participant Platform (SPP). In particular, advanced statistical analysis methods (latent profile analysis, network analysis) and statistical software packages will be utilized. Administrative support for managing specialized software and transferring/developing analyses to open-source software. Support in presenting research on the Vienna CogSci Hub’s Transition website. Clinical research in Mood Disorders The Faculty of Medicine and Hampshire and Isle of Wight Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust are collaborating in a clinical research study, led locally by Professor David Baldwin, investigating the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation in patients with depression. This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with strong research and organisational skills to develop their expertise. The post involves undergoing training in certain psychopathological rating scales, providing study information and assessing potential study participants, monitoring participant progress during the study, entering data into on-line systems, assisting with study awareness-raising, and attendance at local and national research team meetings.
