Basic information and contact details for National Cheng Kung University (NCKU)

institution

National Cheng Kung University was founded in 1931 as Tainan Technical College. It has since become one of the most well-known and successful of all Taiwanese higher education institutions, and has acquired a solid reputation, most notably in the fields of electronics and engineering.

The university itself is spread across a large number of urban campuses, all generally located near the centre of the city of Tainan. These campuses play host to a significant number of advanced academic and public facilities, including the university hospital and an advanced hydraulics laboratory.

As well as these significant academic resources, students have access to a wide variety of social activities on campus, including extensive sports facilities, bars and cafes. In addition to this, students have ready access to Tainan city, the oldest city in Taiwan and widely referred to as being one of the cultural hearts of the country.

National Cheng Kung University, or NCKU, is renowned for its electronics and engineering programs, and has high quality facilities and research. This is not to say the university doesn’t produce graduates in other areas however. The institution contains nine departments offering a wide range of subjects outside of electronics and engineering, including in liberal arts studies and various business and business management-related courses.

The university can lay claim to an extensive line of distinguished alumni, such as Illinois State treasurer Mike Frerichs, novelist Yu Wo, and physicist Chu Ching-Wu.
