Your personal sphere of influence: The Polz lab is looking for a highly motivated and skilled computational postdoc to join our interdisciplinary group of microbial ecologists, geneticists and evolutionary biologists. You will work in an interdisciplinary project that includes local and international collaborations. The expectation is that you are highly independent and will take leadership in organizing key aspects of the research, including supervision of masters and undergraduate students and communication with collaborators. The lab provides opportunity for further training and career development, including support in design and execution of presentations, paper and grant writing, and leadership skill development. The contract for this position is limited to 5 years. Your future tasks: The overall goal of the project is to comprehensively analyze the pangenome structure and dynamics of bacteria, heavily focused on vibrios, the major model in Polz lab. This analysis includes constraining the contribution of mobile genetic elements to pangenome diversity, in the context of population structure. Handling large amounts of genomic and metagenomic data Design and execution of computational pipelines Advanced statistical analysis Phylogenetic and -genomic analysis Machine learning This is part of your profile: You should hold a doctoral degree in biology and be highly trained in bioinformatics and computational analysis. Modelling and machine learning expertise is desirable. A publication record in international peer-reviewed journals is expected. Excellent communication skills in English (written and spoken) are required as the common language in the institute is English. The ability to work in a team is essential. Please note that we are looking for a highly trained and advanced computational biologist. Simple microbial community analysis will not be sufficient for this position. Please be self-selective in your application. Laboratory experience might be helpful but is not required. The Research Program Unit at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki invites applications for a fixed-term  Postdoctoral Researcher position at the Meilahti Campus, starting 1 September 2026 (or as agreed) for a duration of one year. About the position We are seeking a highly motivated researcher to join an international team investigating the links between indoor air quality, dust microbiomes, and health. The project combines amplicon and shotgun sequencing approaches with bioinformatics and experimental toxicological data. The role also involves collaboration with our partners across Finland and Europe. Qualifications Applicants must have: A PhD in a relevant field (e.g. bioinformatics, microbiology, systems biology, computational biology, biomedical engineering) A doctoral degree completed within the past three years (or completed before the start of employment) Skills and experience: Experience in omics and microbiome data analysis Competence in statistical modelling and programming (R and/or Python) Strong analytical and scientific writing skills in English Experience in RNA-seq, single-cell, proteomics or metabolomics, and a publication record in relevant fields (e.g. immunology, toxicology) are considered advantages. Job Purpose: The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop a Multimodal AI for Fire Detection & Safety Systems. Key Responsibilities:  Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Collaborator and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: Develop and deploy multimodal AI algorithms for fire, smoke, and hot-work detection by fusing optical, thermal/infrared, LiDAR, RADAR, and gas sensor data under varying environmental conditions. Design computer vision and human-behavior analysis models for detecting personnel, posture, casualties, and hazardous situations, including operation in low-visibility scenarios. Implement scene mapping, environment perception, and path-planning algorithms using LiDAR and RADAR data to support evacuation guidance and first-responder navigation. Build real-time predictive models for fire intensity and spread forecasting and integrate LLM-based scene description and decision support into an end-to-end deployable system. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree (minimum) in Electrical / Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a closely related discipline, with foundational knowledge in signal processing and machine learning. Working knowledge of computer vision and deep learning concepts, including object detection and image-based classification, with hands-on experience using Python and at least one deep learning framework (e.g., PyTorch or TensorFlow). Basic experience handling and processing sensor data (e.g., camera, thermal, LiDAR, RADAR, or similar perception sensors) in real-world or laboratory settings. Familiarity with Linux-based development environments and standard software tools for data analysis, model training, and evaluation. Ability to independently implement, test, and document applied research solutions, with prior experience through projects, internships, or research assistantships considered sufficient. Prior experience in publishing is desirable.
