Nagoya University, also known as “Meidai”, has a history that can be traced back to 1871, when the Japanese city’s medical school and public hospital - only temporary at the time - opened.

It was in 1939 that the institution became known as Nagoya Imperial University (the last of the country’s Imperial universities), before taking its current name in 1947.

The university has nine faculties and 13 graduate schools, and has a particularly strong reputation for research in the sciences. There are also three research institutes and 18 research centres based at Nagoya University.

The university hosts an annual festival, the Nagoya University Festival (or Meidai-Sai), each June. It is the biggest university festival in the region, pulling in more than 50,000 visitors each year. There are about 100 events at the festival, organised by the university’s clubs and societies. It also includes tours of the laboratories and mock lectures.

Remarkably, six of the 13 Japanese Nobel Prize-winners of the 21st century spent time as members of faculty at Nagoya University. In addition, Shigefumi Mori, a Fields Medalist in 1990, spent the majority of his career at Nagoya.

Alumni of Nagoya University include Uichiro Niwa, the Japanese ambassador to China, and Shoichiro Toyoda, a former CEO of the Toyota motor company.

Nagoya is Japan’s fourth largest city by population, after Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka. Toyota was founded and is still headquartered near the city, while Nagoya City Science Museum is home to the largest planetarium in the world.

Description The Marine Microbiomics Lab at New York University Abu Dhabi seeks to appoint a Research Technician with a background in chemistry or materials science to work on a collaborative project funded by Emirates Biotech, which is currently constructing the largest poly(lactic acid) (PLA) production facility in the world in Abu Dhabi. This unique partnership aims to assess the abiotic and biotic degradation of PLA under UAE environmental conditions, with direct relevance to sustainable plastics production and circular bioeconomy strategies in the region. The successful candidate will be responsible for characterizing PLA and other related materials under laboratory and field incubation experiments, applying a range of analytical and imaging techniques to study degradation pathways and kinetics. The technician will play a central role in Phase 1 of the project (abiotic lab simulations) and contribute to subsequent phases (field incubations and microbial enrichment studies). We are looking for applicants with: A Master’s degree in chemistry, materials science, or a related field. Strong hands-on experience with a range of analytical instrumentation, such as Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), and related techniques. Demonstrated ability to prepare, process, and analyze polymer samples. Familiarity with experimental design, data analysis, and maintaining laboratory instrumentation. Excellent organizational skills and ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team. Primary responsibilities will include: Conducting laboratory simulations of PLA degradation under controlled terrestrial and marine conditions. Characterizing morphological, chemical, and thermal properties of PLA samples using advanced instrumentation. Analyzing degradation products and preparing detailed datasets for kinetics and modeling efforts. Conducting field incubations to deploy and retrieve PLA samples in UAE environments. Assisting with manuscript preparation, data management, and project reporting to both academic and industry partners. The Geneva Graduate Institute is recruiting a Full Professor of International History and Politics (IHP). The applicants’ PhD and research have to be clearly historical in nature. The applicants must have an outstanding research and teaching track record and have made a significant contribution to their scholarly fields. A public intellectual profile is a plus but not a must. Our IHP Department is looking for applicants with a broad vision and wide research interests whose work focuses on several of the following fields: the history of postcolonial state-building processes; and/or the history of transnational/global political violence; and/or the history of democratic and/or of authoritarian regimes; and/or the history of discrimination, especially racism, in comparative perspective. Regarding all four fields: we will consider all regional specialisations; we will only consider applicants who focus on the modern and/or contemporary period. The Geneva Graduate Institute has an interdisciplinary MA programme (MINT) and awards MAs and PhDs in five departments: IHP, International Economics, International Relations & Political Science, Anthropology & Sociology, International Law.
