Department: School of Law & Criminology Vacancy ID: 042723 Closing Date: 05-Aug-2026 We are currently seeking to appoint an excellent candidate with strong knowledge of empirical research methods and analysis, including for example semi-structured expert interviews and/or focus groups, to join the European Research Council (ERC) funded PatentsInHumans project team as a postdoctoral researcher. The PatentsInHumans project aims to develop a deeper understanding of, whether and to what extent bioethical issues posed by patent grant and use over technologies related to the human body are currently considered, if at all, within the relevant legal and other decision-making systems in Europe. The post holder will work with Prof Aisling McMahon (Principal Investigator), School of Law and Criminology, Maynooth University to conduct empirical research with relevant stakeholders, including patients, medical practitioners, members of the legal community, etc to further our understandings of how patent rights can impact access to health-technologies, and potential impacts of this on healthcare, including bioethical implications. They will work with the PI to conduct semi-structured interviews and focus groups with relevant experts and stakeholders to gain qualitative understandings of the potential bioethical implications posed by patents over such technologies and to develop deeper understandings of any challenges to engaging with these under the current decision-making systems in Europe. Post-Doctoral Researcher Level 1 (2026) Salary Scale: €47,273 – € 47,880 p.a. (2 points) Appointments will be made in accordance with public sector pay provisions. About RoboPrecinct@PDD SmartPrecinct@PDD initiative aims to develop a precinct-scale robotics and embodied AI ecosystem at Punggol Digital District (PDD). The programme establishes shared digital infrastructure, regulatory frameworks (including cybersecurity and safety), embodied AI capabilities, industry collaborations, and real-world test-bedding environments to enable safe and scaled deployment of robots in PDD. The Programme Manager will lead the Programme Office and support the strategic planning, development, coordination, and governance of the SmartPrecinct@PDD programme. Key Responsibilities Programme management Reporting to the Lead PI of the SmartPrecinct@PDD programme, the Senior Programme Manager will oversee the overall execution and progress monitoring across multiple work packages in the programme. Coordinate multi-disciplinary activities to ensure alignment of technical development, infrastructure deployment, and regulatory initiatives. Support the principal investigators (PIs) to conduct technical integration between work packages where applicable. Track programme milestones, deliverables, budget, and reporting to the grantor and institution leadership. Supervise other Programme Office staff and coordinate administrative support functions. Stakeholder and governance management Lead engagement with government agencies and other stakeholders to develop governance frameworks for robot operations in PDD. Working in partnership with Emirates Nature–WWF and government stakeholders, the successful candidate will support marine ecological surveys, fisheries monitoring, and environmental assessments that will contribute to evidence-based fisheries management and habitat restoration. The Junior Research Scientist will become part of a multidisciplinary team undertaking ecological field surveys, environmental monitoring, habitat assessments, and fisheries research throughout the UAE. The role combines regular fieldwork with laboratory and data analysis, providing opportunities to contribute to applied research that directly supports marine conservation and sustainable fisheries management. Working closely with researchers from Mubadala ACCESS, the successful candidate will assist with the collection, processing, analysis, and interpretation of biological and environmental data, while contributing to technical reports, scientific publications, and stakeholder outputs. Responsibilities include supporting marine field surveys, including fish community assessments, benthic habitat monitoring, underwater visual surveys, and environmental sampling.
