About the Role

The Male Infertility and Germ Cell Biology (MIGCB) Laboratory at the University of Melbourne, directed by Professor Moira O’Bryan, is a key partner in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Non-Hormonal Contraceptive (NHC) Network.

MIGCB’s research focuses on identifying and validating sperm-based contraceptive targets to expand contraceptive options for women, particularly in low-resource settings.

The lab is now entering the drug screening and testing phase, with a goal to develop new methods that better align with women’s preferences. To support this critical work, a Project Manager with expertise in drug development is needed to oversee the lab's activity within the NHC ecosystem.

Your responsibilities will include:


	A key point of contact for projects related to non-hormonal contraceptive development including data curation and analysis, and reporting.
	Experimental design and execution related to the development of male gamete-based contraceptive strategies.
	Preparation and delivery of reports, publications and presentations related to project progress.
	Co-ordinate of staff and students working on the NHC projects to meet performance milestones. 
	Provide day-to-day operational advice on financial matters while monitoring expenditure against budget for awarded projects.
	Track milestones and deliverables on all research projects as part of the University of Melbourne node of the Non-hormonal Contraceptive (NHC) Ecosystem.


Who We Are Looking For

You will bring strong project management and drug development expertise, with the ability to work independently and coordinate the efforts of a diverse team. Prior experience in reproductive biology is not necessary for success in this role.

You will also have:


	PhD in an area related to drug development.
	Experience in a drug development pipeline and associated quality control and reporting requirements.
	Outstanding experimental expertise as evidenced by traditional and/or non-traditional academic outputs.
	Demonstrable ability to work to strict timelines and deliverables.
	The ability to work well as a member of an inter-disciplinary team, as well as independently.

About the job

The Adjunct Associate Professor position has a full-time equivalence of 20% and has a fixed term of 3 years with the possibility of employment for further periods. This role addresses the growing interest in integrating computer vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence within the aquaculture industry, enhancing fish welfare, promoting sustainable operations, and maintaining the structural integrity of farming facilities both in Norway and internationally. The position is externally funded for 3 years. 

Over the recent years, the Department of Engineering Cybernetics experienced a steady increase in interest in computer vision applications for aquaculture fish farming, thereby increasing the number of students choosing related topics for their master projects. To address this growing interest, the department aims to provide specialized teaching in computer vision tailored specifically for aquaculture.

Your immediate leader is Head of Department.

Responsibilities


	Teaching Topics in Computer Vision for Aquaculture: Preparation of lectures and practical sessions for a new specialization course that includes computer vision for aquaculture. This includes development of teaching material such as lecture notes/compendium and exercises.
	Research and project proposals: Contribute to research initiatives/project proposals that includes computer vision for aquaculture, in areas such as individual salmon recognition, fish net inspection, and 3D reconstruction for aquaculture and potential to the development of autonomous marine solutions, with the aim to submit at least one RCN project proposal within the period.
	Student Supervision: Propose topics for, and supervise project and master’s students working on computer vision applications in aquaculture.
	PhD and Research Supervision: Guide PhD candidates, postdoctoral fellows, researchers, and students at the department who wish to require expertise in computer vision for aquaculture.
	Community Building: Contribute to building a strong academic community focused on computer vision for aquaculture within the department, fostering collaboration with other departments on related methodologies and applications.


In this position, you will share academic responsibilities with the department’s other scientific staff. You are therefore obliged to participate in the implementation of the teaching plan according to the current study curriculum and contribute to the ongoing development of the subject area and teaching program.

Required selection criteria

Adjunct Associate Professor:

The position of Assistant Professor within “Advanced Computer Vision for Aquaculture
Cybernetics” requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.  


	Your academic work must include work in practical and/or theoretical computer vision
	for aquaculture
	A PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, robotics, or a related field with a
	strong focus on computer vision
	At least 2 years of research experience after PhD in computer vision with applications in
	aquaculture or marine environments
	A robust publication record in peer-reviewed conferences and journals, demonstrating
	expertise and leadership in computer vision and its applications in aquaculture
	Proven ability to teach and mentor students at undergraduate and graduate levels, with
	experience in curriculum development and course design
	Proficiency in programming languages such as C++, Python, and MATLAB, and
	experience with deep learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch) and computer
	vision libraries (e.g., OpenCV)
	Demonstrated experience in collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, including
	marine biologists, aquaculture engineers, and industry partners
	Ability to participate in and initiate project grant writing and management
	Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, with the ability to convey
	complex technical concepts to students, colleagues, and non-specialist audiences
	Leadership skills with a proactive approach to mentoring junior researchers for a
	collaborative and supportive research environment


In addition to formal qualifications in teaching at university level, you must document


	Development in teaching and counselling of students over time
	Extensive experience with supervision preferably at the master / PhD level
	Participation in the development of educational quality in a work environment


You must document relevant basic competence for teaching and supervision at university/higher education-level, ref. Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you are required to complete an approved course in university teaching (1 module = 20 h) within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

Salary and conditions

In a position as Adjunct Associate professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 690 000 to NOK 870 000 per year, corresponding with a 20% position, depending on qualifications and seniority. If you are eligible for membership at the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.   

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. After the appointment you must assume that there may be changes in the area of work.
