Mukhametzhan Tynyshbayev ALT University

Mukhametzhan Tynyshbayev ALT University is a technical university located in Almaty, Kazakhstan. The university’s origins date to 1931, when a branch of the Central Asian Institute of Railway Engineers was established in the city to train specialists for the Turkestan-Siberian Railway. This later became the Alma-Ata Institute of Railway Engineers in 1976 and merged with the Alma-Ata Automobile and Road Institute in 1996 to form the Kazakh Academy of Transport and Communications. It was finally renamed in honour of Mukhametzhan Tynyshbayev, Kazakhstan’s first railway engineer, in 2000.

The university’s main building is located on Shevchenko Street in central Almaty, while its wider educational network includes affiliated colleges in cities across the country, including Astana, Aktau, Aktobe and Shymkent.

ALT University is organised into three schools: technology, business, and engineering, as well as a military department offering training under reserve officer and reserve sergeant programmes. It offers courses at undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral level, including transport and transport equipment, air transport, railway transport, transport construction, electrical engineering, automation, information technology, information security, architecture, civil engineering, finance, marketing and management.

The university also works closely with corporate leaders in transport, energy and resources, both in Kazakhstan and internationally, providing students with practical training and internship opportunities alongside their studies.

ALT University is home to the ALT Museum, which is home to collections on both Kazakhstan’s railway development and the university’s own history. The museum contains many documents, maps, photographs and other exhibits relating to the formation of the country’s railway network and the construction of the Turkestan-Siberian Railway.
