Muhammadiyah University of Semarang (Unimus)

Muhammadiyah University of Semarang (Unimus) is a private university in Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia. It was established by the Regional Leadership of the Muhammadiyah Islamic socio-religious organisation in Central Java in 1996, with the university receiving its operating licence in 1999. Unimus initially opened with 14 programmes, with it later merging with several Muhammadiyah health academies, including institutions specialising in nursing, nutrition and medical analysis.

The university’s main campus is located in Semarang, Central Java’s capital and largest city, with a second campus housing its Faculty of Dentistry. The main site includes lecture buildings, the rectorate, Nursing Research Centre, integrated health laboratories, sports centre, student activity centre, accommodation and the At-Taqwa Muhammadiyah Mosque.

Unimus has developed rapidly since first founded and now comprises nine faculties offering more than 45 programmes. Faculties include medicine, dentistry, nursing and health sciences, public health, economics and business, engineering and computer science, education and humanities, agricultural science and technology, and the magister program. Newer programmes include artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, data science and visual communication design. Health education remains particularly prominent academic focus, with the university operating an Integrated Health Laboratory, Nursing Research Centre and the Unimus Medical Centre.

Like with many Muhammadiyah affiliated institutions, students have the opportunity for involvement in Muhammadiyah student organisations including Ikatan Mahasiswa Muhammadiyah (IMM), the Muhammadiyah scouting movement Hizbul Wathan, and Tapak Suci Putera Muhammadiyah, a martial arts organisation. These groups provide opportunities for students to participate in social activities whilst developing leadership skills and engaging with the beliefs and values of the Muhammadiyah movement.
