Mount Saint Vincent University (often referred to as MSVU or The Mount) is a public, mostly undergraduate, university in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Established by the Sisters of Charity in 1873, the university was one of the only institutions of higher education for women in Canada. At a time when women could not vote, it provided an opportunity for women to learn and participate equally in society. Students from more than 70 countries study at the university. As well as on-campus teaching, the university provides a number of distance learning opportunities. Students can choose from over 40 undergraduate degrees in the arts, sciences and professional studies. Professional studies programmes include applied human nutrition, business administration, child and youth study, family studies and gerontology, information technology, public relations, non-profit leadership and tourism and hospitality management. All students on undergraduate programmes can take part in a work placement (practicum, co-op, internship) as part of their programme. The average class size is 23, which is among the lowest in Canada. The university is located just minutes from downtown Halifax, which is a port city and capital of Nova Scotia.

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Surrey invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellow position, focussing on mechanistic modelling of pharmaceutical processes. This role offers a unique opportunity to join a dynamic research team focused on advancing the understanding of pharmaceutical formulation and manufacturing processes. The role The post holder will develop and implement mechanistic models to analyse and predict the behaviour of pharmaceutical processes. Your work will address key challenges within these processes, constructing robust models and simulations that deepen the understanding of the underlying physics involved. The ultimate goal is to create predictive, physics-based models that optimise and control pharmaceutical manufacturing processes effectively. Your main responsibility is to develop and enhance discrete element models (DEM), integrating physics-based mechanistic models to simulate complex fluid and particulate systems. About you This role requires independent initiative, teamwork, and a proactive approach to problem-solving and innovation in pharmaceutical process modelling. The ideal candidate will possess a strong numerical background with proficient programming skills and a proven research record through publications and code development. Experience in developing discrete element models (DEM) or hybrid models, such as DEM-CFD or DEM-SPH, is essential. For this position, a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline is required, although candidates nearing completion may be considered. Exceptional candidates with extensive experience may also be considered. Description We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in database systems with a strong theoretical foundation. We are looking for a candidate excited by the challenge of rethinking data systems in the face of modern constraints such as optimization under uncertainty, constrained query evaluation, or the design of efficient, explainable, and scalable query engines. The successful applicant will help design and build novel systems and algorithms that challenge traditional assumptions in databases, guided by both real-world needs and formal foundations. They will work at the intersection of systems and algorithms, in collaboration with faculty, students, and external partners. Key Responsibilities Lead independent and collaborative research on topics in database systems, including constrained query evaluation, optimization, and reasoning under uncertainty. Design and analyze novel algorithms or theoretical models related to modern data management challenges (e.g., query feasibility, data correlations, probabilistic evaluation, scalability). Prototype and evaluate data system components or extensions to existing open-source engines. Publish in top-tier conferences (SIGMOD, VLDB, PODS, ICDE, ICDT, etc.) and participate in the wider research community. Mentor students and contribute to a vibrant research culture at NYUAD. Participate in cross-disciplinary projects at CITIES, connecting data systems to applications in urban science, planning, and decision support. Qualifications Required: PhD in Computer Science or a related field, with a focus in databases, data systems, theory, or algorithms. Strong publication record in top-tier venues. Solid background in one or more of the following: Query processing or optimization Constrained or combinatorial query evaluation Data modeling under uncertainty or imprecision Design and implementation of database or data analysis systems Excellent programming and prototyping skills. Strong analytical and communication skills; ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
