Established by the Sisters of Charity in 1873, the university was one of the only institutions of higher education for women in Canada. At a time when women could not vote, it provided an opportunity for women to learn and participate equally in society.

Students from more than 70 countries study at the university.

As well as on-campus teaching, the university provides a number of distance learning opportunities.

All students on undergraduate programmes can take part in a work placement (practicum, co-op, internship) as part of their programme.
