We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the international French-Austrian project ChirTrans: Chiral transport controlled by flow microstructure co-financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and the French National Research Agency (ANR). Where you will be: The position is hosted by the research group Computational and Soft Matter Physics at the Faculty of Physics in the group of Dr. Andreas Zöttl. About the project: ChirTrans investigates how chirality of swimming bacteria determines their active transport processes in complex microstructured heterogeneous environments and in complex shear flows. It combines computational and theoretical modeling at the University of Vienna with experiments performed at ESPCI Paris. Our previous work demonstrated the importance of bacterial chirality in transport in simple microchannel flows and near plane surfaces. ChirTrans now aims to uncover how chirality impacts bacterial transport in more complex microstructured environments. The position offers the opportunity to contribute to internationally visible, frontier research. You will have the chance to help build and shape a high-impact interdisciplinary research group while working on your own research. Your responsibilities: As a Postdoctoral Researcher you will: Conduct independent and collaborative research on computational modeling and simulation of bacterial dynamics using coarse-grained hydrodynamic modeling (Brownian Dynamics, Multiparticle Collision Dynamics, etc) Contribute to and lead academic publications in top-tier journals Collaborate closely with experimental collaboration partner at ESPCI Paris led by Prof. Anke Lindner Present research outcomes at international conferences You may contribute to teaching activities depending on interest and availability, in which case you participate in evaluation measures and in quality assurance. The McCarthy Lab has an exciting opportunity for a prospective Research Technician who is interested in synthetic biology approaches to engineer biofilms to better tackle environmental challenges. You will be joining a highly interdisciplinary project, where we will blend synthetic biology, environmental engineering, and biotechnology to develop disruptive solutions to major environmental challenges. Experience with advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. There will be a particular focus on developing approaches to harness bacterial community behaviours like biofilm formation to better tackle environmental pollutants such as waste plastics. Our aim is to leverage cutting-edge advancements in synthetic biology and biofilm engineering to develop innovative strategies for bioremediation, with a key focus on scalable solutions that can be readily adopted by the waste and water sectors. This fast-paced project will give the successful candidate the opportunity to develop new skills by working closely with our interdisciplinary team and build their international profile including through research visits to academic collaborators and working with SMEs. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate and efficient data generation, data management, collation and the reporting of results to the project lead. The post-holder will need to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, organisational, team working and communication skills and have a keen interest in drafting research outputs for peer-review publication. The successful applicant will work closely with other researchers within the McCarthy Lab and with other EBIC partners. There will also be opportunities to explore the commercial Applicants must have a BSc or MSc in a relevant discipline. Experience and knowledge in the field of biofilm formation is essential. Experience in some or all of the following: advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. They should be enthusiastic, well motivated and be able to work both independently and collaboratively. This position is available for 32 months. Role Overview As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have opportunities to tackle real-world, industry-relevant problems, working alongside faculty members and professional officers. The SIT Centre for Intelligent Robotics (CIR) is an applied research centre responsible for developing and maintaining core applied robotics and embodied AI capabilities for real-world deployment. CIR is seeking a Robotics Engineer to implement state-of-the-art learning-based robotic manipulation methods on physical platforms for industry-driven applications, with an emphasis on contact-rich manipulation, robustness, and safe operation. The successful candidate will work closely with physical robots to translate recent advances in learning-based robotics into reliable, deployable systems. Key Responsibilities Implement, adapt, and evaluate state-of-the-art learning-based methods (e.g. imitation learning) for contact-rich robotic manipulation. Integrate hardware and software components into a functional system for real-world deployment. Design and execute field trials (test protocols, data logging, troubleshooting, reliability improvements). Produce technical documentation, reports, and implementation guides to support knowledge transfer and maintainability. Support project procurement activities (e.g., technical specifications, vendor evaluation, quotations) for robotics hardware, sensors, and compute resources. Contribute to publications and technical notes to disseminate research outcomes. To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. The student/assistant will conduct advanced research on low-dimensional quantum materials using cutting-edge methodologies, including cleanroom nanofabrication and possibly participate in transport measurements at cryogenic temperatures. This work will be conducted within a leading research group recognized for its expertise in quantum materials and Scanning Tunneling Microscopy. Your role and goals The goal of the student is to study emergent electronic phenomena in two-dimensional materials. Typical examples of these materials include van der Waals monolayers of transition metal dichalcogenide superconductors, Mott insulators, ferromagnets, multiferroics, graphene, etc. Your tasks will include: Exfoliation of van der Waals materials followed by stacking on a transfer station/glovebox. Characterization of 2D materials using Raman spectroscopy, AFM and/or cryogenic STM. Data Analysis of low temperature measurements. Collaboration with group members and theoretical/computational partners Your experience and ambitions Bachelor’s degree in the field of condensed matter physics or a closely related field. Existing skills and knowledge in nanofabrication and clean room processing of 2D materials (required). Ability to work both independently and as a part of an international and multidisciplinary research group. Interest in experimental condensed matter physics. Excellent command of English. The Finnish language is not required. What we offer We offer a fully funded master´s thesis/research assistant position in the Atomic Scale Physics group led by Prof. Peter Liljeroth. The group consists currently of 2 Academy Research Fellows, 1 Postdoctoral Researchers and 5 Doctoral Researchers. The group focuses studying physical phenomena in atomically precise materials characterized using scanning tunneling microscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy in a wide array of systems such as heterostructures of two-dimensional van der Waals materials, atomically well-defined graphene nanoribbons, and artificial lattices on surfaces. The employment contract is for at least six months (with a possibility of continuation as a PhD). The duration of the employment and the working-time percentage depend, among other things, on the student’s study situation and on whether they will be doing their Master's thesis during the employment contract.
