This $18 million initiative brings together universities, Indigenous partners and industry to transform how cultural heritage is understood and managed in the resources sector. In this position, you will lead industry-engaged research exploring how mining activities such as drilling and blasting impact archaeological sites and culturally significant places. Working closely with industry partners and Traditional Owners, you will help generate new insights that directly improve cultural heritage assessment, protection and management in active mining landscapes. In this position, you will: Conduct innovative, industry-engaged research examining the impacts of mining activities on cultural heritage sites, contributing to high-quality publications, presentations and research outcomes. Collaborate with industry partners, Traditional Owners and researchers to advance sustainable and culturally informed heritage management practices. Build strong interdisciplinary partnerships and contribute to the supervision and development of Honours and postgraduate researchers. Undertake field-based research, including remote fieldwork and travel across regional, interstate and international locations. About You: You are an emerging researcher with a passion for archaeology, cultural heritage and collaborative industry-focused research. You are curious, adaptable and motivated to work across disciplines, bringing a commitment to high-quality research, respectful engagement with diverse stakeholders and a desire to create meaningful impact in the resources and cultural heritage sectors. You will bring: A PhD in Archaeology or a closely related discipline. An emerging research profile demonstrated through high-quality peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. Experience or a demonstrated interest in industry-engaged research, particularly within archaeological, cultural heritage and/or resources sector contexts. Demonstrated ability to contribute to interdisciplinary research projects and establish effective relationships with academic, industry and community partners. A willingness and ability to undertake extended periods of fieldwork in remote environments. Experience working with Indigenous peoples and an understanding of Indigenous data sovereignty principles will be highly regarded. The project focuses on developing innovative methods for hydrogen generation using non-thermal plasma, both with and without catalytic materials. Plasma technologies offer a promising route for sustainable hydrogen production because they can activate molecules and drive chemical reactions at relatively low temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The successful candidate will investigate plasma processes for hydrogen production, including the role of plasma-generated reactive species and the interaction between plasma and catalytic surfaces. The research will explore how operating conditions such as gas composition, discharge power, pressure, and reactor configuration influence hydrogen production efficiency. The project will combine plasma reactor development, plasma diagnostics, and materials characterization. Techniques such as optical emission spectroscopy (OES) and laser diagnostic tools will be used to study plasma properties and reaction pathways. Catalysts materials will be analyzed using appropriate characterization techniques. Several plasma sources are already operating at the ACER CoE, together with optical and laser diagnostic systems. The goal of this research is to improve the understanding of plasma chemistry and plasma-catalyst interactions in order to develop more efficient and sustainable hydrogen production technologies. Key duties: Design and operate non-thermal plasma reactors Study the influence of operating conditions (gas composition, power, and reactor configuration) on hydrogen production. Investigate plasma-catalyst interactions and reaction mechanisms Use optical and laser diagnostic techniques to characterize plasma and quantify reactive species.
