About Mindanao State University - Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography

Basic information and contact details for Mindanao State University - Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography

Mindanao State University–Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography is a public higher education institution in the Philippines and an autonomous campus within the Mindanao State University System. It is based in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, one of the country’s southernmost provinces, where the island and coastal environment strongly influences its academic direction.

The institution began in 1964 as a preparatory high school linked to MSU Marawi. It expanded during the late 1960s and 1970s into a centre for technical and higher education as part of wider efforts to improve access to education in Mindanao and the Sulu Archipelago. By 1969, it was offering degree programmes in technology and fisheries, and in 1982 it was formally integrated into the MSU System as an autonomous college under its current name.

A key focus of the university is marine and ocean related education, particularly in oceanography, fisheries and marine sciences. These programmes are closely connected to the local environment and support industries such as fishing, maritime work and coastal resource management, alongside wider studies in science and technology.

The university has also contributed to expanding access to education across Tawi-Tawi through science focused and laboratory based learning initiatives, helping students in remote island communities progress from secondary to tertiary education.

Mindanao State University–Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography serves students from across the Bangsamoro region and southern Philippines, with an emphasis on applied science, technical training and marine disciplines. As part of the MSU System, it plays a role in supporting regional development and widening participation in higher education in underserved areas.
