What we’re looking for

We are now seeking to appoint a part-time Lecturer in Microbiology to contribute to the teaching and administration of the School’s Foundation, BSc Biochemistry and Biotechnology programmes under the Biomolecular Team’s remit, as well as other relevant undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will complement existing research/teaching activities in the above areas within the school and be encouraged to contribute to research and academic citizenship activity within the School and Faculty, utilising the world-class research facilities available in the Life Science Building as well as in the James Parsons Building.

You will ideally have a PhD qualification in Microbiology or another closely related scientific discipline or be able to demonstrate the ability to create and disseminate knowledge at an equivalent level. You should have teaching and/or research related experience in an area of Microbiology. Some experience of industrial microbiology would be welcomed.

The BioNMR Core Facility, led by Assoc.-Prof. Dr. Julien Orts within the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is seeking a motivated BioNMR Facility & Data Science Specialist with expertise in BioNMR facility operations, user support, and data pipeline development. This is a versatile, hands-on role that combines instrument and infrastructure management with modern data science and coding — an ideal position for candidates who want to operate at the interface of analytical science and computational workflows.

The facility serves a user base of over 100 researchers and maintains strong academic and industrial collaborations. The appointed candidate will act as the operational core of the facility. All responsibilities listed in this advertisement are considered essential functions of the role. Effective performance across all areas — including user support, instrument operations, and data pipeline development — is required throughout the duration of the contract.

Key Responsibilities Technical Troubleshooting & Maintenance


	Provide first-level troubleshooting for instrument and software issues.
	Liaise with vendor support and coordinate problem resolution.
	Conduct routine maintenance and monitor instrument performance.


User Support & Training


	Assist users for complex measurement operations.
	Independently onboard new users through instrument usage procedures and safety protocols.


Data Pipeline Development (including metabolomics and AI)


	Build, maintain, and execute automated data-processing pipelines using Python and/or R.
	Implement statistics, database matching, and quality control algorithms.
	The successful candidate is expected to independently maintain and develop these technical competencies in line with evolving facility demands.


AI & Workflow Optimization


	Integrate machine learning tools for automated spectral processing tasks (e.g., peak picking, artifact removal).
	Identify and implement workflow improvements to increase throughput and reproducibility.


IT Coordination & Data Management


	Oversee facility IT infrastructure for data acquisition, storage, and software.
	Coordinate system updates, backups, data export, archiving, and quality checks.


Safety Compliance


	Ensure user safety during NMR operations, including magnet safety training and cryogen handling oversight.
	Maintain facility safety standards, restricted access controls, emergency procedures, and safety documentation.


Collaborative Research


	Engage in collaborative research projects with groups at the University of Vienna and (commercial) external partners, where capacity permits, extending beyond core service operations.

	Holds a Master's or Ph.D. degree in biophysics, physical chemistry, bioinformatics, data science, chemistry, or a related quantitative discipline.

The Public Health Research Center at New York University Abu Dhabi is seeking a Post-Doctoral Associate in Population Genomics to work with the UAE Healthy Future Study, a cohort of 15,000 Emirati nationals investigating genetic, environmental, and lifestyle determinants of complex diseases. The successful candidate will lead and contribute to large-scale population genomic analyses, with a focus on whole-genome sequencing and multi-omics data and the genetic architecture of complex traits. The PHRC offers a multidisciplinary environment with access to genomic, clinical and lifestyle phenotypes, and high-performance computing infrastructure.

Applicants must hold a PhD in human genetics, genetic epidemiology, biostatistics, computational biology, or a related field, with a strong publication record and experience analyzing large-scale genomic datasets in HPC environments. Applicants must be within 5 years post receipt of their PhD. Terms of employment include a competitive salary and benefits.

Doctoral Researcher in Real Estate Economics

We are seeking an excellent doctoral researcher to join the Real Estate Research Group. The position is rooted in strategic asset management and sustainable transition, primary from the perspective of real estate owner, investor and service provider.

In this position, the doctoral researcher will develop profitable transition pathways to extend the technical, functional, and financial lifespans of residential buildings and portfolios. The work includes analysing building-level technical transition costs and developing new business, financing, and implementation models, such as servitisation, crowdfunding, assets digitalization and other instruments.

The doctoral researcher will work on a project called UP-STOCK (Formulating Just Transition Paths for the Housing Stock). UP-STOCK is a co-research initiative financed by Kone Oyj, Avain Yhtiöt Oy, Helsingin kaupungin asunnot Oy, Haahtela Oy, OP Kiinteistösijoitus Oy, kaukora Oy, Business Finland, and Aalto university.

The project offers collaboration opportunities with key industry stakeholders, and the research community with our international partner universities. Post-doctoral Fellow in LNP-assisted Gene-Editing for Neurodegeneration (Ref.: 537605)

We now invite applicants to join the JC STEM Lab of Nanomedicine for Advanced Therapy (PI: Professor Khuloud Al-Jamal) at the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy. We are a highly collaborative research team developing an innovative lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing platform for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to evaluate single and dual gene knockout strategies targeting two key modifiers of disease pathology, as a novel non-viral therapeutic approach for neurodegenerative diseases.

The aim of our lab is to leverage lipid nanoparticle-mediated gene editing to overcome the limitations of current ALS therapies, spanning gene editing technology, nanoparticle-based delivery, in vivo disease modelling, and computational systems analysis to translate a precise, broadly applicable gene therapy strategy toward clinical relevance.

Duties and Responsibilities:


	Design and evaluate CRISPR-Cas9-based gene editing strategies for single and dual gene knockout in disease-relevant models.
	Formulate, characterise and optimise lipid nanoparticles for the encapsulation and delivery of gene editing payloads.
	Conduct in vivo animal studies, including administration of LNP-based therapeutics, sample collection, and disease progression monitoring.
	Perform behavioural studies and phenotypic assessments in disease mouse models to evaluate therapeutic efficacy.
	Apply immunohistochemistry to determine tissue- and cell-type-specific targeting and delivery precision.
	Conduct western blot and molecular analyses to quantify target protein knockout and pathological markers.
	Support transcriptomic studies and contribute to computational modelling of molecular interplay.
	Collaborate internationally, prepare reports and protocols, and contribute to grant and manuscript writing.
	Supervise students and disseminate findings through publications and conference presentations.
	Collaborate with other team member to ensure effective synergy between various projects. 


Requirements:

Education and Expertise:


	A Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Bioengineering, or a related field is required.
	Strong biological skills and a proven research track record in gene editing or nanoparticle-based therapeutics.
	Demonstrated experience in scientific writing and publication.


Research Skills:


	Hands-on expertise in gene editing, particularly CRISPR-Cas systems, including guide RNA design and editing validation.
	Experience in LNP formulation, characterisation, and nucleic acid payload encapsulation is essential.
	Familiarity with neurodegenerative disease biology, particularly neuroinflammation, microglial activation, and neuroprotection mechanisms.
	Proficiency in in vivo experiments including behavioural studies is a plus.
	Expertise in cellular and molecular biology techniques such as western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture (mainly motor neurons).


Administrative and Collaborative Skills:


	Ability to manage a research programme financially and administratively under the guidance of the Principal Investigator.
	Ability to work independently with excellent problem-solving skills, collaborate within a team, and supervise students.
	High attention to detail in experimental design and execution with a willingness to adapt to new procedures and undergo further training as necessary.


Language and Technical Competence:


	Excellent communication, command of written and spoken English.
	Capable of contributing to grant writing and funding applications.
	Proficient in IT skills for efficient data management and communication within the research programme including but not limited to the data management, analysis, and reporting.
