The Medical University of Vienna dates back to 1365, when it was a faculty of the University of Vienna, making it one of the oldest medical universities in Europe. It became an independent institution in 2004.
The university has two undergraduate degree programmes – one in medicine and one in dentistry. It also offers a medical informatics master’s programme, which combines IT with biomedical research and medicine; 16 different PhD programmes in basic science research; 10 different doctoral programmes in applied medical science; and 18 other postgraduate courses.
The university has 84 accredited teaching hospitals and two teaching departments. Since 2014, undergraduate students at the university undertake an internship at one of the hospitals in their final year.
The institution defines its approach as a “triple track strategy” as it combines research, education and patient care. It has special programmes and measures aimed at encouraging and supporting women to choose scientific careers.
One of the highlights of the university’s campus is its Josephinum building, which was built in 1785 during Joseph II’s reign and is considered one of the most significant examples of neo-classical architecture in Vienna. It is now home to a range of collections on the heritage of the university and houses the Museum for Anatomical Wax Models.
The Medical University of Vienna is affiliated with four Nobel laureates, including Robert Bárány and Julius Wagner-Jauregg; they received prizes in physiology or medicine in 1914 and 1927 respectively.
The city of Vienna is known for its rich culture and history, opera houses, and famous coffee houses, which have been listed as an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO since 2011.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in this field or a closely related field and have a strong background in research. Relevant international experience is of advantage. The successful candidate will become part of an international network of universities and research institutes. Teaching Responsibilities In the role of a lecturer, the successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Civil Engineering and Construction Management (BCE) and related fields. The expected workload for the in-class lecture conduction is 8 academic hours per week, totaling 240 academic hours per year (1 academic hour equals to 45 minutes). Teaching should reflect both, current research methods and results, and practical approaches and examples. Research Responsibilities As a faculty member of a research-oriented university, the successful candidate is expected to significantly contribute to the scientific profile of VGU through innovation. This includes and is not limited to comprehensive activities in basic research as well as applied research in the fields of construction management policy, environment assessment, and risk management. The ability to apply and generate externally funded research projects is highly desirable. A collaboration in research/services between the successful candidate and other programs and industry is envisaged. This also includes the management of the state-of-the-art geotechnical engineering laboratory at VGU. Administrative responsibilities The successful candidate is expected to contribute to the development of the Civil Engineering and Construction Management Program by participating in administrative, marketing and other public activities of the program in consultation with the Academic Coordinator of the study program and the German partner university, namely Biberach University of Applied Sciences (HBC). She or he is also expected to contribute actively to the academic self-administration of the Faculty of Engineering and university by being willing to stand for election to the Faculty Council, Academic Senate and/or other bodies. Qualification Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or Construction Planning and/or a closely related field, preferably from a well-known international university. A current title of Professor will be a plus, as experience and understanding of the German higher education system and methodology.
