The Faculty of Arts, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of UNIVERSITY LECTURER OF THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY for a fixed-term position 1.8.2026-31.12.2031 (or starting as agreed). The position includes a six-month trial period and is located at the Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies. The applicant is expected to have in-depth expertise in the field of knowledge theory as well as sufficient expertise in teaching other core fields of theoretical philosophy (particularly metaphysics and philosophy of mind) in both the bachelor’s and master’s programmes. Expertise in the philosophy of language is considered an asset. The appointee’s teaching duties include lecture courses and master’s seminars related to the theory of knowledge and other core fields of theoretical philosophy. The assignment also includes the planning of new courses. Successful completion of the duties associated with the position requires, in particular, good interaction and cooperation skills. The university lecturer will actively contribute to degree programme development and teaching planning in collaboration with colleagues at the department and degree programmes. Broad-based expertise in film and television studies and versatile teaching skills, as well as collaboration with other disciplines in art studies, are considered an asset. Requirements for the position and assessment of qualifications According to the Regulations of the University of Helsinki, appointees to university lectureships must hold an applicable doctoral degree and have the ability to provide high-quality research-based teaching and supervise theses (usually prepared in Finnish). The selected applicant must demonstrate evidence of independent post-doctoral research as well as sufficient teaching experience suited to the position. When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration. Pursuant to the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching and research positions at the University must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. The language of instruction in the present position is Finnish. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must also have satisfactory skills in Swedish and good skills in English. About MediaFutures/ the position About MediaFutures MediaFutures is a Centre for Research-based Innovation (SFI) funded by the Research Council of Norway and hosted by the University of Bergen. The centre is located at Media City Bergen and is closely connected to the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, the DARS research group, and adjacent computational social science and AI research environments at UiB. MediaFutures conducts interdisciplinary research on responsible artificial intelligence and media technologies, including media trust, recommender systems, AI-driven content production and analysis, content interaction and accessibility, Norwegian language technology, and broader questions in computational social science and behavioural data science. The centre produces scientific publications, prototypes, tools, and innovation outputs in close cooperation with industry partners. About the Position The position will be affiliated with the DARS research group. Responsibilities Conduct research in behavioural data science aligned with MediaFutures' strategic priorities and with the broader scientific agenda associated with DARS and the Norwegian Computational Behaviour & AI Lab. Contribute actively to the development of new national and international grant proposals. Identify funding opportunities and support concept development for large-scale interdisciplinary research initiatives. Qualifications and personal qualities: The applicant must: Hold a Norwegian PhD or an equivalent degree within Data Science, Computer Science, Information Science, Computational Social Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field. Have submitted the PhD thesis at the time of application and have been awarded the degree before the starting date of the position Demonstrate strong competence in statistical analysis, computational methods, and data-driven research. Have a clear research profile relevant to the centre's scientific priorities and the broader research themes pursued in DARS and in the scientific environment associated with the Norwegian Computational Behaviour & AI Lab. Demonstrate excellent writing skills and the ability to formulate clear and convincing scientific arguments. Demonstrate ability to combine independent research with strategic and collaborative development work in a shared research environment. The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT. Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs. Job Requirements A good degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications like registered PE would be advantageous. Deep technical specialist with 10 or more years of working experience in mechanical design, systems design and integration or related area in mechatronics would be preferred. Experience in following areas are highly desirable: Complex Mechanical systems development and integration Material and components selection including working knowledge with integration and selection of components/systems such as actuators, pumps, hydraulics system, PLC/Controls systems CAD software such as SolidWorks Simulation such as Finite element and CFD simulation Hands-on prototyping and fabrication skills to guide students in labs It will be advantageous with working knowledge of Material testing and material properties Programming of Control and PLC systems Software such as Ansys and Abaqus Extensive hands-on experience and knowledge of industry practices and engineering principles to bring industry perspective to SIT. Keen interest in innovation projects, with demonstrated ability in developing solutions to technical problems. Strong supervisory skills and enjoy working closely with students in an educational environment. Demonstrate proficiency to keep abreast of development in the field and pursue professional certification programs. Possess industrial certifications in relevant areas will be an added advantage.
