About Mapúa University

Mapúa University, formerly known as the Mapua Institute of Technology, is a research university in Intramuros and Manila, in the Philippines.

Mapua takes its name from its founder, the famous Filipino architect Tomas Mapua, and was the first university in the Philippines to offer a bachelor’s degree in architecture.

The Intramuros campus has an interesting history: in the First World War, the site was used as a fort by Japanese forces, before being almost completely destroyed during the country’s liberation in 1945.

The university’s main campus is still located within the walls of Intramuros fort in central Manila, today. Meanwhile a second campus at Makati City hosts the university’s school of informational technology among others.

Around 16,000 undergraduate students are enrolled at Mapua University, taught by more than 900 academic staff.

Courses offered at Mapua span from post-school vocational training courses to undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes. The university is known for specialising in technology, and offers at least 15 undergraduate and 18 graduate engineering degree courses, but is also popular for its media studies, civil engineering department, and business management among other subjects.

Mapua prides itself on its commitment to environmental sustainability, and in 2010 launched an initiative to reduce its carbon footprint. A number of undergraduate and PhD courses at the institution have a focus on sustainable engineering and design.

More than 60 extracurricular clubs take place across Mapua’s two campuses, ranging from subject-specific societies to amateur dramatics and judo. The Intramuros campus also has a chapels and several other religious spaces, as well as a gym, where sports, games and concerts are held.
