Located in one of South Asia’s culturally vibrant and historic city of Lahore, LUMS is Pakistan’s leading research-intensive university, excelling in teaching and driven by a philosophy of Learning Without Borders. Schools and Faculty

With multidisciplinary learning across five Schools including Business, Humanities and Social Science, Science and Engineering, Law and Education, LUMS has produced outstanding change-makers and leaders amongst its 14,298 alumni. The founding Suleman Dawood School of Business is the first and only one in Pakistan to have earned AACSB International—The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business accreditation. To promote gender diversity, the School awards a 50% tuition fee waiver to all women enrolled in its MBA, EMBA and MS programmes.

LUMS established the first 4-year undergraduate across disciplines and a 5-year law programme setting national standards that have been emulated by most universities in Pakistan. Its largest School, Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, is known for the most progressive liberal arts curriculum in South Asia. LUMS scientists and engineers at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering are making research breakthroughs in cybersecurity, data privacy, nanoscience and energy that are being adopted by national policymakers in the public and private sectors. LUMS faculty include the largest concentration of economists and legal experts in the country while its nascent Syed Ahsan Ali and Syed Maratib Ali School of Education is focussing its efforts to impact educational leadership and high quality, sustainable teacher training.

 

Enhancing the Student Experience

LUMS offers a residential experience on a 100-acre campus often described as a botanical garden. It has multiple facilities for sports including indoor swimming, basketball, squash, tennis and fields for soccer and cricket.

The University’s Pedagogical Partnership Programme is the first of its kind in South Asia. It strives to offer every student a paid partnership experience. Hundreds of students apply each semester to collaborate with faculty and staff to design courses, offer feedback on teaching, engage in research and work directly with service units on campus. The addition of two summer semesters offering courses across the five Schools makes LUMS a tri-semester university.

Co-curricular activities supported by an elected Student Council, 54 Student Societies and leadership positions in academic, disciplinary, and Student Support Offices differentiates LUMS from other universities in Pakistan. Description The eBRAIN Lab (https://ebrain4everyone.com) in the Division of Engineering at New York University Abu Dhabi invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Associate position, to work in the area of research and development (R&D) of next-generation Edge-AI and Embodied-AI Systems with tiny-LLMs, tiny-VLMs, tiny-VLAs; Agentic-AI systems; and Robust Generative AI targeting hallucination, safety and security issues. Besides robustness, systems should also be optimized for high performance and energy-efficiency to realized efficient Embodied/Edge-AI implementations. A key focus will be on investigating novel methods with strong theoretical foundations as well as their full-system deployment in real-world applications from different fields (like autonomous systems, healthcare, and robotics) with cross-validation. Prof. Shafique’s lab has many-years of R&D experience in cross-layer design and optimization for building energy-efficient and robust brain-inspired, autonomous, and cognitive systems and intelligent vision systems, including efficient learning and inference of complex AI/ML algorithms, specialized neural processing hardware and design tools, and ML security, and their applications in resource-constrained Embodied-AI systems (like autonomous vehicles, UAVs/UGVs, Robotics, smart houses/cities, Wearables, and Healthcare). The long-term vision of the eBRAIN lab is on embedding an energy-efficient and secure electronic brain inside modern cyber-physical systems (CPS) and IoT-Edge devices to enable assistive cognitive technologies that care for / serve humanity and the ecosystem in a safe and green way. The successful applicants will join and drive a number of fascinating projects on designing, implementing, optimizing, prototyping and testing innovative solutions (software, hardware, or both) for the next-generation embodied-AI, GenAI and Agentic-AI systems, targeting high performance & energy-efficiency, robustness, and trustworthiness. A key focus will be on IP generation, patenting, high-quality publications in top-tier ML/AI, Robotics, and Systems conferences, and efficient prototyping for real-world use-cases. The candidates will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists, research engineers, graduate research students and undergraduate students, to investigate cutting-edge scientific methods and to develop full-system prototypes. The eBRAIN lab offers an excellent working environment with an international team of excellent researchers and engineers, high-tech equipment, and active R&D engagement, thereby providing many development possibilities. The candidates are expected to work in a highly collaborative environment with other lab members and industry collaborators. Requirements: Applicants should have a PhD in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field. Extensive and sound knowledge of ML, AI, DNN, LLMs/VLMs, Multimodal LLMs, RAG, Agentic frameworks, tinyML, ML frameworks (like PyTorch and Tensorflow), and Prototyping ML systems is required. The candidate should demonstrate a solid experience in practical AI/ML system development. Additional knowledge on MLOps, robust/secure computing, Hallucinations and Alignment, privacy-preserving ML, and ML security is highly desirable. Applicants with strong industrial experience and/or with publications at top/A* ML venues (conferences and journals) are highly preferred. The candidates are also expected to have strong organization, problem-solving, analytical, communication and writing skills as well as high motivation to pursue world-class research and development for practical ML/AI systems. The Woebken group investigates the genomic and physiological features of soil microorganisms that allow for their survival and success. Projects explore arid soils (desert biological soil crusts) that experience extended droughts, and temperate soils that are limited in easily available carbon sources. Your future tasks: We are looking for a highly-motivated technician who will support our research group in microbiological and molecular biological tasks. These include (but are not limited to): lab organization, media preparation, cultivating soil microorganisms, growth and activity measurements, nucleic acids extraction, PCR and dPCR, soil sample preparation for downstream analytical measurements. A particular focus will be the generation and curation of a culture collection in the Woebken Group. As such, the applicant should have experience in microbiology and/or molecular methods. The position is initially a one-year fixed-term contract (with mutual agreement part-time position is possible). On mutual agreement a transition to a permanent position is possible thereafter. This is part of your personality: Completed training in chemical engineering or biology (apprenticeship, vocational school, technical college) or equivalent training. Or Master’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology or related discipline. Highly motivated candidate with an excitement and enthusiasm for soil microbiology and for learning new methodological skills. Previous laboratory experience is required. Previous experience with bacterial growth and cultivation is ideal. The ability to work independently, reliability, a high degree of personal responsibility, and flexibility in performing assigned tasks. Ability to communicate in English. Overall good communication skills. Excitement and enthusiasm for science. Proactivity. Ability to work well with others, enjoyment of working in an international team Good organizational skills.
