The Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Vienna is the largest Austrian institution of mathematical research and tertiary education in the mathematical sciences. Your professional field of activity:

As a University Assistant (Praedoc), you will complement the research team around Univ.-Prof. Adrian Constantin, PhD. Our ideal candidate has a strong interest in Mathematical Analysis with special backround in Partial Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, can easily integrate into our team, independently contribute to current research, and work with responsibility for results.

The start of the contract is the 1st of march 2026 or later, the exact starting date is negotiable. The employment period is 4 years from the beginning of the contract.

Our research focuses on the field of Mathematical Analysis. As a team, a positive, inclusive, and respectful working environment is important to us, and we regularly exchange ideas on current topics and projects in our group meetings.

Your future tasks:

Active Participation in research, teaching & administration, which means:


	Collaboration and research in the field of partial differential equations with emphasis on geophysical aspects (oceanography, atmospheric flow):

	
		Development of own solutions as part of the research group of Prof. Constantin.
		Conclusion of a dissertation agreement within 12 - 18 month is expected.
		Membership in the Vienna School of Mathematics and active participation in its activities will be required.
	
	
	Interdisciplinary colalboration:
	
		You participate in international scientific collaborations, as well as international conerences and workshops.
	
	
	Collaboration in teaching and administration:
	
		You participate in the administration of the institute, teaching and research.

Required Qualifications/Position Requirement:


	Master studies in mathematics, or a related field completed and certificate provided in due time before the start of the contract

Your personal sphere of influence:

The working group “Probabilistic and Interactive Machine Learning” within the research group “Data Mining and Machine Learning” at the Faculty of Computer Science, led by Prof. Tschiatschek, develops methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence, especially in the areas of reinforcement learning and deep probabilistic models.

To strengthen our team, we are seeking a university assistant to develop advanced machine learning methods for improving the simulation and optimization of distributed systems, for instance by specializing neural ODEs and their training routines.

This research will address challenges driven by the energy transition, which is transforming electrical power systems (EPS) into low-inertia, highly digitalized, power-electronics-driven architectures with increasingly interdependent component and system dynamics. Traditional simulation and optimization approaches, which separate EPS analysis and simulation by timescale into isolated zones with independent models and solvers, are no longer sufficient.

New methods are needed to tackle emerging challenges across timescales, from real-time operational control to long-term planning for optimization and expansion. This creates a demand for fast, flexible modeling frameworks, such as surrogate models to accelerate high-fidelity simulations, physics-informed neural networks, neural ODEs, and other hybrid physics–ML approaches.

The contract term for employment is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not issue a non-renewal notice within the first 12 months.

Remuneration

The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. How can we perform table-top experiments to obtain new insights into the foundations of quantum physics? Can we measure gravitational effects on entangled photons for shining light onto the interface of quantum physics and gravity? The research group “Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation”, led by Univ.- Prof. Dr. Philip Walther, is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information at the Faculty of Physics, and member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) – one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe – and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quanta. The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions. The main activities reach from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces.

Fair salary plus health care and social benefits: The basic gross month salary of EUR 3,714,80 (full-time basis; amount as of 1 February 2025) increases if we can credit professional experience.
