Kyoto University of Advanced Science was formerly known as Kyoto Gakuen University. It is a private university in, Kyoto, Japan. Originally founded as a trade school in 1925, the university celebrated its 50 year anniversary in 2019 with a name change to its current name. It has two campuses located in Uzumasa, Kyoto City, and Kameoka City, Kyoto Prefecture. The university is organised into five faculties and five graduate schools. The undergraduate faculties include the faculty of economics and business administration, the faculty of humanities, the faculty of bioenvironmental science, the faculty of health and medical sciences, and the faculty of engineering. The graduate schools include the graduate school of economics, the graduate school of business administration, the graduate school of human culture, the graduate school of bioenvironmental science, and the graduate school of engineering. The International Office provides support for international students helping with things like visa applications, scholarships, and accommodation. In 2020, the university's faculty of engineering began to offer programmes taught entirely in English.

The Lipid Metabolism and Neurochemistry research team is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to contribute to a research program investigating why humans lose myelin with ageing and how this sensitizes us to neurodegenerative diseases of ageing. This is a molecular and cellular research project that is expected to generate new insights into brain metabolism, how glial cells and neurons communicate, and how these processes break down in the ageing brain. You will work in one of the leading research teams in brain metabolism, supervised by Prof Anthony Don. This position will be based at the University of Sydney's Charles Perkins Centre, an outstanding collaborative research environment. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to develop/produce/investigate a web-based Ship Simulation and Optimisation Software Platform. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: i. Develop naval architecure calculation and ship design tools based on analytical or empirical methods, i.e., stability calculation, resistance and propulsion estimation, weight estimation, etc. ii. Develop a practical parametric model framework for ship and system design. iii. Carry out naval architecture calculations, i.e., stability, resistance, hydrodynamic analysis, etc. iv. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements Have relevant competence in the areas of naval architecture and ship hydrodynamics. Have a degree in Naval Architecture / Marine Engineering / Ocean Engineering / Other Relevant Engineering Degree. Possessing a Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous. Experience in any programming language will be advantageous. Experience in marine hydrodynamics will be advantageous. To create efficient adjoint-based optimization methods for tunable metasurfaces that provide rapid sensitivity/gradient evaluation, support high-dimensional design spaces, and allow systematic optimization of performance targets such as efficiency, bandwidth, and multi-condition operation. To design and fabricate reconfigurable metasurface prototypes that implement a global tuning mechanism, and to experimentally characterize their electromagnetic performance. To validate the achieved tuning range and functional performance in laboratory measurements against modeling and simulation results. This position is part of the MetaTune Doctoral Network "Reconfigurability using inversely designed metasurfaces", which has been funded under the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) program. Acquire knowledge During the thesis, the candidate will acquire a solid understanding of the theoretical and practical requirements for designing tunable and reconfigurable metasurfaces, with emphasis on multilayer architectures and system-level performance metrics (efficiency, bandwidth, angular response, and robustness). In parallel, the candidate will gain in-depth knowledge of analytical modeling techniques and adjoint-based optimization methods for high-dimensional inverse design, as well as develop practical expertise in prototyping and laboratory characterization.
