In 1962, the Kitasato University was founded to mark the 50th anniversary of the Kitasato Institute, Japan’s first private medical research facility. It was named after Kitasato Shibasaburo, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine in 1901. Some 114 years later, the 2015 Nobel Prize in the same subject was awarded to a distinguished emeritus professor at the university, Satoshi Ōmura. It is now known as Japan’s leading university in the study of life sciences, with the aims of advancing the discovery and use of biological resources and promoting environmental conservation. The university is spread over four main campuses. The Shirokane Campus (Tokyo) is home to the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Graduate School of Infection Control Sciences, and School of Pharmacy. The Sagamihara Campus (Kanagawa prefecture) includes five graduate schools (marine biosciences, nursing, science, medical sciences and frontier engineering), six schools (medicine, marine biosciences, nursing, science, allied health sciences and frontier engineering), and College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Towada Campus (Aomori prefecture) has Graduate School of Veterinary Sciences and School of Veterinary Medicine. The School of Health Sciences was inaugurated at Niigata Campus in April 2024. The university has three hospitals. The medical institutions also function as a clinical education and training venue for the university’s undergraduate and graduate students. Its practical research specialisms are in interprofessional health care programmes, research and education for infection control, research and education in agriculture and clinical education and research through inter-hospital collaboration. Kitasato University has worked to establish itself within an international network and has launched and maintains exchange agreements with more than 40 universities and institutes worldwide including in China, Mongolia, Korea, Thailand, the US, Germany and Italy.

Description We are seeking researchers who are passionate about Data Science, with an emphasis in Computational Social Science, with a starting date of September 1, 2026. Some of the possible research topics include: (i) social media analysis, (ii) collaboration and teamwork, (iii) gender inequality, (iv) diversity, (v) online controlled experiments, and (vi) network science. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and hard-working with a Masters degree in Data Science, Computational Social Science, Computer Science, or Information Science, or a bachelor’s degree with several years of experience and expertise in their field. The position requires experience with at least one of the following: Data Science, Machine Learning, Computational Social Science, Big Data. Relevant skills could include statistical analysis, data management and collection, causal inference, network analysis, graph theory, visualizations, and online tool development. Experience in conducting online controlled experiments is also desired, but not required. Excellent communication skills in English, ability to work in multidisciplinary teams, and scientific creativity are essential. This project focuses on federated causal inference in heterogeneous data environments, addressing the challenge of enabling trustworthy causal analysis across distributed datasets while preserving privacy. The successful candidate will be responsible for the end-to-end investigation of novel federated learning strategies for causal inference. The role will bridge rigorous theoretical work with hands-on algorithm design and development on real-world datasets. The core responsibility is to build and validate federated causal inference algorithms through simulations and live demonstrations. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) to ensure all project deliverables are met. Derivation of novel performance metrics for federated causal inference algorithms. Analysis of causal inference models in federated settings using synthetic and real-world datasets. Design and development of novel federated causal inference algorithms and associated software APIs. Validation of algorithms via simulations and live demonstrations. Job Requirements A Master's degree or higher in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, or equivalent. Strong theoretical background in statistics and machine learning. Knowledge of the basics of federated learning and causal inference is highly encouraged. Proven track record in research and development of machine learning algorithms.
