The Woebken group investigates the genomic and physiological features of soil microorganisms that allow for their survival and success. Projects explore arid soils (desert biological soil crusts) that experience extended droughts, and temperate soils that are limited in easily available carbon sources. Your future tasks: We are looking for a highly-motivated technician who will support our research group in microbiological and molecular biological tasks. These include (but are not limited to): lab organization, media preparation, cultivating soil microorganisms, growth and activity measurements, nucleic acids extraction, PCR and dPCR, soil sample preparation for downstream analytical measurements. A particular focus will be the generation and curation of a culture collection in the Woebken Group. As such, the applicant should have experience in microbiology and/or molecular methods. The position is initially a one-year fixed-term contract (with mutual agreement part-time position is possible). On mutual agreement a transition to a permanent position is possible thereafter. This is part of your personality: Completed training in chemical engineering or biology (apprenticeship, vocational school, technical college) or equivalent training. Or Master’s degree in microbiology, molecular biology or related discipline. Highly motivated candidate with an excitement and enthusiasm for soil microbiology and for learning new methodological skills. Previous laboratory experience is required. Previous experience with bacterial growth and cultivation is ideal. The ability to work independently, reliability, a high degree of personal responsibility, and flexibility in performing assigned tasks. Ability to communicate in English. He/ She should demonstrate a proven track record of impactful research, publications, external grant and leadership, a strong commitment to engaging students in inquiry-based learning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as a strong track record in translational AI research, particularly in the following areas: (i) development of AI-enabled ophthalmic imaging devices with regulatory approval and clinical deployment; (ii) retinal image analysis, foundation models, and multimodal learning for ophthalmology; (iii) AI-driven screening systems for ocular and systemic diseases; (iv) machine learning approaches for multi-omics or clinical data integration in ophthalmology. Those with less experience may be considered for appointment as Associate Professor or Assistant Professor. The appointees are expected to lead and manage translational research projects in ophthalmic AI, leverage expertise in retinal image analysis, multimodal learning, and foundation models to develop clinically deployable screening and diagnostic systems, participate in teaching and supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students, and perform administrative duties. A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. Description The Division of Engineering, New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit Associate Research Scientist to work on advanced sustainable functionalized membranes for desalination and water treatment, under the supervision of Professor Nidal Hilal, Director of the Water Research Center and Global Professor of Engineering. The successful applicant will drive an exciting project on developing functionalized membrane materials to tailor sustainable antifouling hybrid ultrafiltration membranes and antibacterial nanofiltration or reverse osmosis membranes for desalination and water purification. The candidate will explore advanced membrane fabrication techniques and characterization tools (SEM, AFM, Raman, TEM, DSC, XRD, FTIR, TGA, BET, etc.) to correlate fabrication-structure-property-performance of novel nanomaterials with sustainable membranes for desalination and water purification via separation processes. The candidate will work in a multidisciplinary environment consisting of PhD-level scientists and engineers, graduate students, and undergraduate students. The successful applicant will manage the project and work closely with post-doctoral researchers, establish deep technical knowledge, and develop transferable skills. He/she will actively be involved in developing novel concepts and writing research proposals. He/she will work on solving complex problems with efficiency and creativity. He/she will be involved in writing progress reports, authoring peer-reviewed publications, drafting patents, and presenting results at national and international conferences. The successful candidate will have to demonstrate his expertise in assessing antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of nanomaterials, membrane fabrications, sewage water treatment, life cycle assessment, and separation processes. He/she will be detail-oriented and well-organized and will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills. The successful candidate should be able to work independently and as part of a team. Applicants must have a PhD in materials science and engineering, environmental chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related field, along with at least 5 years of relevant post-PhD research experience. Analytical characterization skills and excellent experimental expertise relevant to assessing the antibacterial and antibiofouling properties of diversified sustainable membranes are required. Candidates with a history of peer-reviewed publications in a related research area and prior expertise in materials science, environmental chemistry, and water treatment will be preferred. This position will begin in September 2026 as a two-year contract, renewable depending on performance.
