Description

We are inviting applications for a Postdoctoral Associate in the Division of Social Science at NYU Abu Dhabi from individuals who have or will soon receive a PhD in one of the social sciences, computer science, or a related discipline. The appointment will begin September 1, 2025, subject to final budget approval.

The post-doctoral associate will spend half their time on independent research, and half their time on collaborative research with Professor Aaron Kaufman. The collaborative research will be at the intersection of computational social science, large language models, and political science.

We seek a candidate with expertise in managing big data sets and efficiently implementing machine learning and NLP workflows, and who has an interest in applying those tools to political institutions and political economy. This is an excellent position for a computational scientist looking to move to the social sciences.

The position does not require teaching, but it may be possible to get teaching experience for compensation. You would join a group of over 20 post-doctoral fellows and 70 faculty in the Division of Social Science.

A position of Science Communication Manager is being advertised by the SFB (Special Research Area) "Discrete Random Structures: Enumeration and Scaling Limits": https://SFBrandom.univie.ac.at/

This is a 4.3M€ Research Network funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), which gathers probabilists and combinatorialists of the University of Vienna, the Technical University of Vienna and the Technical University of Graz to work on a series of joint projects on random discrete structures arising in mathematical physics.

Your personal sphere of influence:

The advertised position is associated with the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna. The extent of employment is half-time (20 hours per week), Classification CBA, §54 VwGr. IVa with a minimum monthly gross salary of €1.633,10 for 20 hours. The salary can be increased if we can credit professional experience. We are looking to fill this position as soon as possible. It is a limited contract until the end of the project (29.02.2028).

Your future tasks:

As Science Communication Manager you are a dedicated professional with a passion for science communication and storytelling and will develop and implement the communication and outreach strategy of the network and more general of the faculty addressing both the academic community as well as the general public.

In this role you will proactively write and pitch press releases and news stories, generate content related to the SFB and the mathematics department's activities and project results on social media and update relevant webpages. You will coordinate public engagements/social outreach events (e.g. KinderUni, Lange Nacht der Forschung) and with your creativity and ideas develop new communication activities to make our research accessible to the wider public.

This is part of your personality:


	Degree in communication, Media studies, marketing, journalism or in Mathematics (M.Sc or Ph.D) or equivalent professional experience
	Experience with social media, video, photography, podcasts, or other media
	Excellent command of English and German
	Experience in science journalism and/or science writing is a strong plus
	You are enthusiastic about supporting our researchers and communicating our science to a varied audience
	Team player with the ability to work independently
	If you bring a degree in mathematics or have worked in a science communication role in a research environment it will be a great bonus!

Your Responsibility

Your key responsibilities include:


	To formulate and articulate research objectives, alongside developing proposals for both individual and collaborative projects, utilizing established methodologies and techniques to execute research effectively within the specified area;
	To analyze data meticulously, interpret findings, evaluate scholarly texts, and contribute innovative insights, while adhering to project deadlines and collaborating seamlessly with team members and partners;
	To write up research work for publication and/or contribute to the dissemination at national/international conferences, resulting in successful research outputs;
	To identify opportunities and assist in writing bids for research grant applications;
	To build relationships with both internal and external contacts in order to exchange information, to form relationships for future collaborations and identify potential sources of funds and/or opportunities for collaboration.


About You


	The candidate must have obtained a PhD degree within 3 years and in the relevant areas being recruited to;
	Excellent oral and written communication skills in English, including the ability to communicate with clarity on complex information. Excellent communication skills in Chinese is a plus.
	High analytical ability to analyse and illuminate data, interprets reports, evaluate and criticise texts and bring new insights.
	Ability to creatively apply relevant research approaches, models, techniques and methods.

Dr. Steven Zhou, an Associate Professor of International Business and Strategy at NUBS China, conducts research that bridges the gap between academia and management practices, with a focus on cross-cultural innovation and management from an indigenous perspective. Boasting over ten years of industry experience, Dr. Zhou has served as a senior engineer and consultant in various roles, including project manager, international business consultant, business development, and R&D director. He holds several patents and has contributed to national and industrial standards in green building and sustainable construction. Dr. Zhou's academic contributions are substantial, with numerous articles on strategy and innovation in top-tier journals such as the Journal of International Business Studies, Asia Pacific Journal of Management, and Management and Organization Review. His leadership and involvement in research projects have attracted funding from prestigious organizations, including the World Bank, NSFC, and the Zhejiang S&T Bureau, demonstrating his significant impact on the field. About the Project. Top management team (TMT) characteristics are viewed as key social factors that may influence firms’ environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance. This project aims to investigate how TMT characteristics would impact on firms’ ESG performance. In addition, given the intricate relationships between focal firms and their supply chain partners, we will unravel how the ESG performance effects of TMT characteristics spill over to upstream suppliers and downstream customers. This project shall adopt multiple research methods, including (1) case study, (2) survey method, (3) econometric method (e.g., panel data estimation method and difference-in-differences identification), and (4) text mining method. We aim to collect a diverse dataset to explore how TMT characteristics influence the ESG performance of firms. This project is expected to last for 2 years. Our expected deliverables include conference papers, academic papers, research grant applications, teaching cases, and others.

Your Remuneration, Benefits and Support

You will be offered a fixed term contract initially with University of Nottingham Ningbo China for 2 years with a probation of 2 months. You will be offered a minimum annual salary package of RMB267,233 with competitive benefits package. Postdoctoral Research Fellow is also able to apply RMB50,000 research funding after starting your research.

The appointment will begin September 1, 2025, subject to final budget approval. Appointment will be for three academic years.

The post-doctoral associate will allocate 50 percent of their time to independent research and the other 50 percent to collaborative projects with Professors Jean Imbs and Laurent Pauwels. The collaborative research will be in the field of international macroeconomics and trade. We want to utilize data on global supply chains to analyze their effects on macroeconomic outcomes, explore their interactions with geopolitical factors, and estimate deep preference and technology parameters using the cross-country and cross-sector dimensions of the data.

We are looking for a candidate specializing in international macroeconomics and trade, with strong knowledge of trade models featuring rich input-output linkages. The ideal candidate should have practical experience and proficiency in handling large datasets and coding sophisticated simulations and estimations.

The position does not require teaching, but it may be possible to get teaching experience for compensation. You would join a group of over 20 post-doctoral fellows and 70 faculty in the Division of Social Science.
