Kazakh National Agrarian Research University

The Kazakh National Agrarian Research University was formed by the merger of the Alma-Ata Zoo-Veterinary Institute with the Kazakh Agrarian Institute. 
It has six faculties and two departments. These include forestry and land resources, veterinary and zooengineering, engineering and technology, agrobiology, water research and information technlogy and the High School of Business and Law. There are departments of general education and physical education and sports. Each faculty has its own student residence.
It has strong international connections, offering 11 double-degree courses and with research groups like the Kazakh-German Institute for Ecosystems and Biodiversity, and the Kazakhstan-Korea Research Centre focussing on greenhouses.
Alumni include Aida Balayeva, Minister of Culture and Information, and mixed martial arts star Azat Maksum.

Your personal sphere of influence:

The working group “Probabilistic and Interactive Machine Learning” within the research group “Data Mining and Machine Learning” at the Faculty of Computer Science, led by Prof. Tschiatschek, develops methods of machine learning and artificial intelligence, especially in the areas of reinforcement learning and deep probabilistic models.

To strengthen our team, we are seeking a university assistant to develop advanced machine learning methods for improving the simulation and optimization of distributed systems, for instance by specializing neural ODEs and their training routines.

This research will address challenges driven by the energy transition, which is transforming electrical power systems (EPS) into low-inertia, highly digitalized, power-electronics-driven architectures with increasingly interdependent component and system dynamics. Traditional simulation and optimization approaches, which separate EPS analysis and simulation by timescale into isolated zones with independent models and solvers, are no longer sufficient.

New methods are needed to tackle emerging challenges across timescales, from real-time operational control to long-term planning for optimization and expansion. This creates a demand for fast, flexible modeling frameworks, such as surrogate models to accelerate high-fidelity simulations, physics-informed neural networks, neural ODEs, and other hybrid physics–ML approaches.

The contract term for employment is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not issue a non-renewal notice within the first 12 months.

How can we perform table-top experiments to obtain new insights into the foundations of quantum physics? Can we measure gravitational effects on entangled photons for shining light onto the interface of quantum physics and gravity? Can we exploit quantum photonics technology for novel quantum machine learning, quantum computing and quantum cybersecurity applications? Can we scale-up multiphoton platforms by using integrated optics, quantum-dot single-photon sources and customized two-dimensional nonlinear materials? Such questions are the driving force behind our research. You will be part of our team and develop new ideas, technologies and experiments.

Your personal sphere of play:

The research group “Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation”, led by Univ.- Prof. Dr. Philip Walther, is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information at the Faculty of Physics, and member of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) – one of the largest quantum hubs in Europe – and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quanta. The group’s research combines the development of scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and other quantum information applications with the investigation of fundamental quantum science questions. The main activities reach from quantum control of single photons using solid-state photon sources, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media and detectors based on superconductor technology to interferometric precision measurements of weak gravitational forces.

For our further reinforcement we are looking for a Senior Scientist that supports in particular the research on experimental quantum machine learning. The position is currently limited to 1 year with the possibility of subsequent unlimited employment.

Department of Chinese History and Culture 

The Department of Chinese History and Culture is an academic department within the Faculty of Humanities.  Its mission is to offer high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide interdisciplinary training in the study of Chinese history and culture.  Currently, the Department offers PhD and MPhil programmes, a taught-master degree programme, a major degree programme in Chinese History and Culture, two minor degree programmes in Chinese History and Culture and History of Science and Technology in China, respectively, and university-wide general education courses. Job Functions

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(c)    a distinguished international reputation in research and scholarship, and demonstrated international leadership in any one or more of the specialist areas of Chinese Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Chinese Religion and Chinese Art;

(d)    a strong record in attracting competitive or/and interdisciplinary research funding;

(e)    a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching;

(f)     a global perspective, proven qualities of academic leadership and substantial administration / management experience, as well as demonstrated ability of building up a strong team of faculty members with different research and cultural backgrounds;

(g)    effective interpersonal communication skills and resources management skills, and excellent adaptability to changes and challenges; 

(h)    good knowledge of the higher education environment in the local and global context; and

1. A distinguished national and/or international track record, commensurate with career stage, of significant professional performances and recordings, in a variety of repertoires and professional performing organisations and/or settings, including orchestras and chamber music.
2. Demonstrated high-level expertise in a range of woodwind repertoires and national styles of concert music from the 18th through 21st centuries. Expertise in core repertoires is required, and expertise in performing and commissioning new music in a variety of contemporary idioms is desirable.
3. Dedication to the representation of diversity in concert programming, and evidence of creative and considered approaches to repertoire selection, concert curation, and public communication through artistic practice.
4. Substantial experience and evidence of excellence in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate woodwind students.
5. Demonstrated capacity to recruit outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate woodwind students.
6. Evidence of ability to teach into other performance-based subjects within the undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, and to interact with complementary fields in the Conservatorium.
7. Evidence of ability to develop a distinctive program of performance-based creative research and deliver a variety of high-quality creative research outputs.
