Karachi Metropolitan University

Karachi Metropolitan University is a public-sector university in Karachi, Pakistan. The university emerged from the transformation of Karachi Medical and Dental College (KMDC) into a broader higher education institution, with KMDC and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital becoming constituent units of the new university. KMDC itself was established in 1991 as Pakistan’s first medical college.

KMU’s campus is located in the residential and commercial suburb of North Nazimabad, recognised as an educational hub home to many other neighbouring schools and colleges.

KMU is developing into a comprehensive university with programmes extending beyond its original medical focus. Its faculties include Karachi Medical and Dental College, the College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, Department of Physical Therapy, Karachi School of Business Administration and Karachi Institute of Computer and Emerging Technologies. Developing academic areas such as biomedical engineering and emerging technologies reflect the university’s growing range of academic disciplines.

Despite its recent expansion, KMU retains a strong focus on medical teaching, and bridges medical education and real-world healthcare through Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy and allied-health education operate here alongside a major hospital environment, which supports student’s practical and clinical learning. The university also provides opportunities for students to gain experience through internships, workshops and other community projects, both locally and internationally.
