Justus Liebig University Giessen is one of Germany’s best known universities for life sciences and cultural studies. Established in 1607, the institution took its current name after one of the nineteenth century fathers of organic chemistry Justus von Liebig - the inventor of baking powder, fertilisers and chloroform. It is among the oldest institutions of higher education in the German-speaking world. 

Its wide-ranging programmes are mostly taught in German. However, some degrees are also available in English including economic development, biotechnology and genomics, world food economy, cultural studies, geography and applied theatre. International students benefit from free German language classes, and can take a year to learn German before doing their degree. 

Giessen is truly a student city, with a higher student ratio than any other university town in Germany. It is located 40 minutes away from Frankfurt by car. Among the extracurricular activities offered on campus is its famous orchestra, playing in national and international performances. The campus also has a Botanical Garden, created in 1609 as a medicinal herb garden. Mathematikum, JLU's mathematics museum, offers a hands-on experience with more than 120 exhibits. 

Some of the university’s most respected research is carried out across agricultural science, ecology, nutritional sciences and biotechnology at the Research Centre for Biosystems, Land Use and Nutrition. A large proportion of the university’s student body are international students doing PhDs. 

Its list of famous alumni include Noble Peace Prize winner and Kenyan environmental and political activist Wangari Maathai, German politician Brigitte Zypries, economist Michael Huther, botanist Johann Jacob Dillenius, zoologist Elie Metchnikoff, and jurist and Israel’s first president of the Supreme Court Moshe Smoira.

We have an exciting opportunity at the University of Southampton for a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to work within a highly skilled team, we have our own workshop to carry out on-site repairs, including milling, turning, and welding. This spans over a vast estate, this role will play a vital part in supporting the delivery of planned and reactive maintenance of Mechanical systems across the University, to keep our estate operational. You will have excellent technical and communication skills, with the ability to plan and manage your own workload. You will need to be positive with a can do attitude and proactive problem solver to be able to manage a mixture of planned and reactive maintenance to ensure that work is delivered on time and to a high standard. You will be able to work in a team environment. The successful candidate will hold a City and Guilds qualification and/or minimum NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical engineering or equivalent discipline and have successfully completed a Mechanical apprenticeship or similar training programme. You will be familiar with Health & Safety legislation and understand risk assessments, method statements, and how to apply these to planned and reactive maintenance. You will have experience of maintenance in a commercial or similar environment. A full driving license and participation in an out of hours call out rota are required. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree preferably in mechanical engineering, ophthalmology and visual sciences, mechanical design, manufacturing and automation or a related discipline, with experience in data science, coding, image analysis, and statistical analysis. About us: The Department of Psychology was founded in 1950 at the Institute of Psychiatry (now the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, IoPPN); since when it has carried on a distinguished programme of research, teaching and clinical practice, with a long-standing link with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. The Department is one of the UK’s largest academic groupings of clinical and health psychologists, with developing strength in broader area of applied and basis psychological science. The IoPPN is a Faculty of King's College London and the largest academic community in Europe devoted to the study and prevention of mental illness and brain disease. The IoPPN's greatest strength is the interdisciplinary nature of both its research strategy and educational activities, providing unique opportunities for students and staff. The post holder will contribute specialist health psychology teaching on our BPS accredited MSc (Health Psychology) and BSc (Psychology) programmes. The appointment will be made on the Academic Education Pathway, where the primary contribution is to education (80% of role) and secondary contribution to scholarship which is primarily education-focused (20%). On average, this would be the equivalent of four days a week spent on education. The AEP contract is focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship, and leadership in education. The following expectations are associated with the AEP: teaching, supervision, student support, educational leadership and innovation, education-related research and administration. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated colleague who can make a distinctive contribution to health psychology education and supervision across our accredited MSc in Health Psychology and BSc Psychology programmes. You should have excellent teaching and communication skills and be able to inspire and inform students. As post holder, you will provide educational leadership on our MSc in Health Psychology. This would include programme and/or module leadership, course delivery, assessment, research project supervision, and personal tutor roles. You may also support other undergraduate and postgraduate taught courses within the school and faculty, and across King’s, for example with project supervision. You should be able to demonstrate suitable teaching skills and experience including curriculum development and assessment design, along with an ability to supervise student research dissertations. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  Job Details This Research Fellow will contribute to the UrEco 2030+ project: “Optimizing Urban Ecosystem Services Model for Urban Climate and Biodiversity in Singapore towards 2030 and Beyond.” This position requires experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and related fields, with added expertise in ecosystem services assessment, ecological engineering, social sciences, policy making, environmental science, and/or urban environmental issues at the policy–academic interface. This position is ideal for an early- or mid-career researcher with experience in GIS or remote sensing who seeks to apply and expand their expertise in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary research environment. The successful candidate will work with leading researchers and contribute to cutting-edge research and policy dialogues at the intersection of blue–green infrastructure, tropical urban ecosystem services, and urban resilience (covering themes such as urban flooding, thermal cooling, recreation, and biodiversity). The work includes Local Climate Zone (LCZ) classification and collaboration with Japanese university partners for integrated macro- to micro-scale analysis. As part of understanding the ecosystem services that are involved in Singapore, the successful candidate will also be expected to perform some field-based data collection during the duration of the project. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met.  Identify, simulate, and analyse ecosystem service models using GIS, remote sensing, and field data. Manage, process, and analyse ecological and socio-economic datasets to develop and calibrate high-accuracy ecosystem service models. Conduct literature reviews and synthesize findings into conceptual frameworks and research designs. Support cross–work package integration, particularly in developing tools for blue–green infrastructure policy and decision-making. Perform quantitative and qualitative data collection, analysis, and visualization. Draft and edit research reports, policy briefs, and academic manuscripts. Contribute to project management, workshop organization, and stakeholder or policy dialogues. Be involved in regular field work data collection and to perform environmental and biodiversity surveys (fish, birds and insects) as part of a research team.  To communicate and liaise with any internal and external stakeholders to ensure project deliverables are met. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by Supervisor. Job Requirements PhD in Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Environmental Science, Earth Science, or related disciplines. Strong working knowledge of GIS platforms (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial data analysis techniques. Training or demonstrated experience in remote sensing, spatial data collection, and thematic mapping. Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., R, MATLAB, SPSS, Primer, Python). Experience with analytical techniques such as ANOVA, PCA, Regression, and Multidimensional Scaling (MDS). Experience in ecosystem service identification and analysis is highly advantageous. Excellent data management, research design, and reporting skills. Strong communication and presentation skills in English.
