Jazan University was founded in 2006 and within a decade it enrols around 55,000 students.

The university inititally opened with colleges of medicine, engineering, computer science and information systems and community studies. This has now grown to 23 colleges and eight research institutes.

Its main campus in Jazan City was opened in 2022 as host to the college of business studies and will eventually accommodate 50,000 students.
