The International Relations team leads on the university-wide internationalisation activity at LJMU. The team identifies and develops international collaborative and strategic partnerships, represents the university overseas, provides guidance to and attracts international students to study at the university, delivers student mobility (inbound and outbound), and facilitates the University’s international summer school. International Relations is also leading on the implementation of the International Plan 2023-2030, which reframes the university’s international ambitions to align with its priorities in delivering university Strategy 2030. We are now looking for a permanent Regional Manager to join the team. Based in the International Relations Directorate, reporting to the Head of International Recruitment within the portfolio of External Engagement and Partnerships, the Regional Manager is responsible for taking the lead on delivering international recruitment objectives for a portfolio of country markets in line with the University’s wider international strategy. The primary countries of responsibility will be confirmed upon appointment but will be within the Gulf and Africa (outside of Nigeria). Market responsibilities can change from time to time in line with university priorities. The responsibilities include building effective relationships with external stakeholders to develop market activity and achieve specific international objectives; offering expertise and providing market intelligence which supports the development of international activity within the university; identifying and where appropriate capitalising on opportunities for the university to take forward its international strategy; and representing the University overseas. You will have significant experience of working effectively within international student recruitment within a UK University setting; demonstrable experience of formulating and implementing international recruitment plans; demonstrable and significant understanding of national and international educational developments and their impact on HE and the international student recruitment environment; significant experience and knowledge in overseas education systems and qualifications; numerate with prior experience of gathering and interpreting data and using statistical analysis to inform decision making; experience of managing budgets; experience of working in a target setting environment and a track record of meeting targets. You will be required to spend considerable time overseas each year. We are particularly interested in candidates working in the areas of early modern science, or science or medicine in Asia, or Indigenous knowledge systems. The Project A funded PhD position is available to understand why background noise disrupts language interactions between children and their caregivers. Children learn to talk through back-and-forth exchanges with their caregivers, and these interactions often unfold within environments filled with sounds from television, media devices, and overlapping conversations. Research shows that background noise is associated with reductions in infants’ vocalizations and caregivers’ speech in real time, highlighting how everyday environments can shape social interactions and language learning. However, the underlying mechanisms explaining the association remain poorly understood. This PhD project aims to move beyond correlational evidence by developing an experimental framework in lab-based immersive environments to investigate how background noise affects: Infant–caregiver language interactions Infant arousal and attention Neural processing of speech By integrating levels of analysis, the project will provide a mechanistic account of how moment-to-moment disruptions in noisy settings may scale to affect language development, with implications for theories of early learning as well as for optimizing children’s everyday environments. The University and ISEY The PhD will be based at The Institute for the Science of Early Years and Youth ISEY, at the Stratford Campus of The University of East London. This research institute is led by Sam Wass, and the PhD will be supervised by Catalina Suarez-Rivera and Ira Marriott Haresign. The successful candidate would be working within a wider team of 20 researchers at ISEY, but would be the only researcher working on this specific project. This means there is some scope for the PhD candidate to contribute to shaping the project focus and design. Knowledge exchange and dissemination will be a key part of this PhD and the successful candidate will be expected to share project findings and associated research with early years practitioners, as part of the training and development services that ISEY offers. Therefore, this role is especially suitable for someone passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice and translating research for a non-scientific audience. This may involve writing articles for educator-facing publications, attending early years events and running online and face to face training, support will be given in these areas.  The applicant The PhD candidate must have a first or upper second-class undergraduate honours degree and preferably a Masters in a discipline relevant to the project. While we expect that this project would suit graduates from a psychology background, we are happy to receive applications from a range of backgrounds that have potential to enhance the project.  A demonstrable understanding and passion for psychological research is essential and experience working with children is highly desirable.  Familiarity with head-mounted eye-tracking and EEG is also highly desirable, as is experience with programming and data analysis tools. This PhD will involve advanced quantitative data analysis. Successful applicants should have an interest in language development, parent-child interactions, multimodal communication, attention, arousal, and EEG. Whilst some remote work is possible, the successful candidate will need to be willing to be based at the ISEY lab, in Stratford, London for at least 50% of the time. During data collection periods PhD students may need to be in London every day. Please note that we are drawing all applicants’ attention to the fact that unfortunately, the funding available for this project does not cover the higher tuition fees required for international students. Together, we will conduct an Australian-first life-course study of children who received listening and spoken language (LSL) early intervention, moving the field beyond short-term childhood outcomes to robust, policy-relevant evidence about adult education, psychosocial functioning, workforce participation and lifetime economic returns. The Shepherd Centre is uniquely placed for this study given its fifty-year history in paediatric hearing loss research and practice, its national and international networks providing access to a significant cohort, and its support of over 900 families across eastern Australia. The Macquarie University Hearing Research Centre generates knowledge that reshapes hearing health policy and practice on a national and global scale. The resulting evidence will be translated directly into clinical routines and practice. This collaboration will advance hearing loss research by conducting an Australian-first life course study of children who received listening and spoken language early intervention over a 20-year period. This study will move the field from "short-term/early childhood outcomes" to robust, policy-relevant evidence about adult education, psychosocial functioning, workforce participation and lifetime economic returns. The resulting new evidence will be translated and implemented into clinical routine, practice. Your key responsibilities include: Make independent and original contribution to the research project Report and provide regular updates to the Director, Macquarie University Hearing Research Centre, and the CEO, The Shepherd Centre Conduct research and project management in accordance with relevant Macquarie University Hearing Research Centre and The Shepherd Centre policies, procedures and requirements Ensure efficient collaboration and communication between all project partners Coordinate and draft ethics applications and amendments; ensure compliance with ethics, privacy and data governance requirements. Support data collection and help to inform data analytical approaches for this study Consistently publish findings in high-impact publications and policy briefs and provide strong pilot data to support external funding applications such as to the NHMRC Investigator and/or Partnership Grant schemes, ARC Linkage Projects, and other external competitive schemes. Secure sustained funding beyond the initial investment, ensuring continuity of the Research Fellow and project delivery. Engage with Industry, Governments and Policy Agencies such as the Department of Health, Disability and Aged Care, and state/territory Education Departments. Implement this 3-year project with staged cohorts, to demonstrate feasibility and outcomes before expanding cohort size and contributing organisations.
