About Islamic Azad University (IAU)
Basic information and contact details for Islamic Azad University (IAU)
Islamic Azad University was established in 1982, by decree of Ayatollah Khomeini, as a private technical and engineering university. A member of Khomeini’s inner circle played a key role in the university for more than three decades. During this time, he lifted restrictions on private universities, allowing for a massive expansion in Islamic Azad University’s size and scope.
Today, it is the world’s fifth largest university, with more than 1.3 million students, spread across 100 campuses in Iran and four overseas: in Dubai, the UK, Lebanon and Afghanistan.
More than 230,000 new undergraduates enrol each year, studying subjects ranging from agricultural sciences to condensed-matter physics, endocrinology and metabolism, polymer science, psychology and public, environmental and occupational health.
IAU campuses are home to a range of research centres, hospitals, laboratories, workshops, sports facilities, recreational areas and IT facilities. They publish 508 scientific journals, 145 of them in English.
