The McCarthy Lab has an exciting opportunity for a prospective Research Technician who is interested in synthetic biology approaches to engineer biofilms to better tackle environmental challenges. You will be joining a highly interdisciplinary project, where we will blend synthetic biology, environmental engineering, and biotechnology to develop disruptive solutions to major environmental challenges. Experience with advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. There will be a particular focus on developing approaches to harness bacterial community behaviours like biofilm formation to better tackle environmental pollutants such as waste plastics. Our aim is to leverage cutting-edge advancements in synthetic biology and biofilm engineering to develop innovative strategies for bioremediation, with a key focus on scalable solutions that can be readily adopted by the waste and water sectors. This fast-paced project will give the successful candidate the opportunity to develop new skills by working closely with our interdisciplinary team and build their international profile including through research visits to academic collaborators and working with SMEs. The successful candidate will be responsible for accurate and efficient data generation, data management, collation and the reporting of results to the project lead. The post-holder will need to demonstrate excellent attention to detail, organisational, team working and communication skills and have a keen interest in drafting research outputs for peer-review publication. The successful applicant will work closely with other researchers within the McCarthy Lab and with other EBIC partners. There will also be opportunities to explore the commercial Applicants must have a BSc or MSc in a relevant discipline. Experience and knowledge in the field of biofilm formation is essential. Experience in some or all of the following: advanced cloning systems, CRISPR tools, metagenomic mining and the use of different biofilm imaging platforms is highly desirable. They should be enthusiastic, well motivated and be able to work both independently and collaboratively. This position is available for 32 months. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry funded research project where you will be part of the research team to develop advanced Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) scanning technologies. Job Responsibilities Participate in research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: i. Conduct comprehensive literature review on NQR technology, including design approaches, scanning methods, signal processing techniques, and comparison with alternative detection technologies. ii. Support design and development of NQR prototype, including system architecture, component selection, and experimental setup. iii. Conduct lab and site tests to evaluate the performance of NQR prototype. iv. Generate design documents and test documents at every stage of development until the final prototype. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements Has a bachelor’s degree in Electronics; Specialization in RF/Microwave or Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is preferred. Has solid knowledge of electronics, including circuit design, PCB layout, and hardware troubleshooting. Has relevant competence in the areas of Radio Frequency design and measurement; Familiarity with high-power amplifier systems is a plus. Has relevant experience in the areas of Digital Signal Processing (DSP) design and implementation is a plus. Experience in electromagnetic simulation using CST Studio Suite and circuit simulation with PSpice, LTspice, or equivalent is an advantage. Experience with developing software for instrument control and data acquisition using LabVIEW is helpful. This role supports applied food processing research projects with strong industry relevance, focusing on product development, process optimization, and food characterization. Key Responsibilities Lead and manage fundamental research projects on mechanical and textural characterisation of meat and novel foods in close collaboration with Principal Investigators, co-PIs, and academic partners from NTU and A*STAR. Establish a nanomechanical and macro textural foundation for small sample cultivated meat using advanced tools such as AFM, micro-indentation, and micro texture analysers (e.g., TA.XT plus), Confocal Laser Microscopy Imaging etc for the purpose of quantification of hardness, chewiness, springiness, fracture stress, and fracture strain for small sizes of food samples Compare the feasibility, resolution, and accuracy of AFM, indenters, and micro-TA probe type systems specifically for characterising cultivated meat, contributing method development knowledge to the field. Deploy dynamic oral processing simulation platforms, including tribology, Kramer shear cell testing, and mastication simulators to investigate breakdown characteristics, brittleness vs. plasticity, and frictional/lubrication properties. Generate mechanistic insights linking textural dynamics to sensory perception. Integrate multi-modal datasets from different mastication simulators into a 3D Principal Component Analysis (PCA) space, enabling quantitative comparison between cultivated meat and conventional animal meat, and identify key textural descriptors defining equivalence. Develop novel experimental or analytical methodologies to address current gaps in small sample meat texture characterisation and oral processing simulation. Consolidate experimental data into robust evidence packages for academic publications, grant reporting, and translational research decisions. Coordinate project timelines, milestones, resource allocation, procurement, and compliance with institutional and ethical requirements. Prepare and submit high quality scientific manuscripts to peer reviewed journals, as well as technical reports, progress updates, and final deliverables for funding agencies. Engage actively with internal and external academic collaborators, organise progress meetings, and contribute to technology transfer where relevant to open science or public benefit. Present research outcomes at international conferences, academic seminars, and stakeholder meetings, and contribute to outreach through approved communication channels.
