Would you like to conduct research on neurodegeneration, neuroinflammation, and vascular involvement in the brain in an experimental environment? Then we look forward to welcoming you as a Praedoc University Assistant at the University of Vienna. The advertised PhD project is translational in nature and deals with the cellular toxicity of pathologically modified α-synuclein species in relevant in vitro models of the central nervous system. Your personal sphere of play: As a Praedoc university assistant, you will join Associate Prof. Marietta Zille, PhD's research team in the field of cellular and molecular neuro- and vascular pharmacology. You will be involved in a clearly structured PhD project and work independently on scientific questions. The research focus of the working group is on regulated cell death mechanisms, the neurovascular unit and blood-brain barrier, stroke and cerebral hemorrhage, neuroinflammation, cellular senescence, and innovative in vitro models for investigating neurodegenerative processes. Associate Prof. Zille's team currently consists of a postdoc, predocs, and administrative colleagues and has a strong international network. Your future tasks: You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means: You will work on an experimental PhD project in the field of neurodegeneration, cellular neurotoxicity, and glial stress responses You will plan and conduct in vitro experiments with primary cells of the central nervous system, especially neurons and glial cells You will investigate the effects of toxic stimuli on cell viability, cell death, and cellular stress and inflammatory responses You will apply established cell biological, molecular biological, and microscopic methods and evaluate them quantitatively You will work with models of the blood-brain barrier to analyze barrier function and transport processes We expect the dissertation agreement to be completed within 12-18 months You will work continuously on your dissertation and its timely completion You will hold courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement You will take on administrative tasks in research and teaching This is part of your personality: Completed master's or diploma degree in pharmacy, biology, biomedicine, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field, or about to complete a relevant degree Proven practical experience working with primary cell cultures, ideally from the central nervous system Experience with experimental models of cellular damage or cell death induction Familiarity with quantitative cell viability or cell death assays is an advantage Experience in independently planning and conducting laboratory experiments Interest in neurodegenerative or cerebrovascular diseases, neuroinflammation, or cellular stress mechanisms Very good written and spoken English skills (C1 level) Careful, structured way of working and strong team and communication skills Interest in university teaching and further scientific qualification Experience with glial cells, neurovascular issues, or models of acute cellular damage is a particular advantage. Doctoral Researcher in Geological Hydrogen Reservoirs – HydRes Project The University of Helsinki, Department of Geosciences and Geography, invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher position in the HydRes project, “Finding H₂ – Geological hydrogen reservoirs for sustainable energy production in Finland”, funded by the Research Council of Finland. The position will start in April 2026, or as agreed, and continue until the end of December 2029. Position description The HydRes project is a multidisciplinary collaboration between the University of Helsinki and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, aiming to advance the understanding and sustainable utilization of geological hydrogen reservoirs in crystalline bedrock. Hydrogen is a key enabler of the green transition, and geological hydrogen has the potential to provide a renewable, emission-free energy source for sectors that are challenging to electrify. HydRes will address questions related to the formation, exploration, renewability, and exploitation of geological hydrogen reservoirs, combining geochemistry, microbiology, isotope analysis, and modelling. The doctoral researcher will focus on the geological hydrogen aspects of the project by integrating microbiological and geochemical data to develop diagnostic tools for assessing hydrogen potential and sustainability of geological hydrogen production. The position offers a unique opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary team, develop expertise in isotope geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry, and geomicrobiology, and contribute to the emerging topic of the role of geological hydrogen in the hydrogen economy. The doctoral researcher will join the Sustainable Earth Resources Research Group at the Department of Geosciences and Geography, University of Helsinki, and benefit from state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, and collaborations with leading national and international experts. The position includes participation in field sampling campaigns at deep drill hole sites, as well as research visits and opportunities for professional development and networking. Requirements MSc degree (or equivalent) in geology, geochemistry, environmental sciences, microbiology, or a related field by the first day of employment. Strong interest in isotope geochemistry, hydrogeochemistry and/or geomicrobiology. Excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
