The Department of Arts and Design of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities invites applications for the position of Associate/Assistant Professor in Visual Communication Design. According to the current plan, a Faculty of Design will be established at the new campus, offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees programmes in Visual Communication Design.

Our newly established Visual Communication programme integrates design, technology, research, and is building a world-class team of designers, artists, and interdisciplinary scholars. The programme emphasizes: 1. Cutting-edge practices: motion design, 3D visualization, interactive media, immersive experience design, generative/AI design, and future-driven visual communication strategies; 2. Strong research orientation combined with practical, industry-relevant artistic creation; 3. Interdisciplinary exploration across art, design, technology, humanities, education, and emerging fields; 4. A global vision linking China and the world, and bridging tradition and the future. We are seeking internationally minded faculty with strong portfolios, innovative teaching, and a desire to co-create a forward-looking design school.

Qualifications

1. Doctoral degree in Visual Communication Design or related areas (or equivalent terminal degree with significant professional achievements); 2. A strong portfolio of design practice; 3. Demonstrated teaching experience at graduate or undergraduate level; 4. International exposure through study, work, exhibitions, or industry collaboration; 5. Proficiency in English; 6. Interdisciplinary or cross-cultural scholarship linking design with technology, humanities, or new media; 7. Expertise in one or more future-oriented areas is preferred: (i) Motion graphics and time-based media; (ii) 3D/CG visualization; (iii) XR/VR/AR; (iv) UI/UX and digital product design; (v) AI-assisted design; (vi) Creative coding/computational design; (vii) Data visualization and information systems; (viii) Immersive exhibition and spatial experience design; 8. Candidates with a commitment to building a young, ambitious programme and contributing to long-term strategic growth of the Faculty of Design will be especially valued.

The selected candidate is expected to assume duty subject to the mutual agreement of the both parties.

Remuneration

A taxable annual remuneration starting from MOP1,052,800 (approximately USD129,980) for the position of Associate Professor and MOP855,400 (approximately USD105,600) for the position of Assistant Professor will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ academic qualification and relevant professional experience. The current local maximum income tax rate is 12% but is effectively around 5% - 7% after various discretionary exemptions. The  Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences (VISESS)  is soliciting applications for  VISESS Completion Grants  starting in summer semester 2026.

VISESS addresses societal challenges through inter- and trans-disciplinary academic research connecting the cosmos with planets and atmospheres including its environments and with the anthroposphere. We aim our students to become world-leading experts in either of these three branches while also confidently communicate and contribute across all three branches.

The VISESS Completion Grants aim to support VISESS doctoral students during the final phase of their doctoral studies to focus on the completion and submission of their thesis. Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration in the context of the successful completion of your thesis, which means:

	You have successfully passed your public presentation, submitted your dissertation agreement, and since then submitted your annual progress reports.
	You have shown active and regular participation in VISESS activities.
	You can provide a convincing statement that the completion and submission of your thesis can be expected at the end of the grant.
	You can provide a statement from your supervisory team on their commitment to support you in the final phase of your writing process.
	You have ensured that there is no other funding source available.

Department of Chinese History and Culture 

The Department of Chinese History and Culture is an academic department within the Faculty of Humanities.  Its mission is to offer high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes that provide interdisciplinary training in the study of Chinese history and culture.  Currently, the Department offers PhD and MPhil programmes, a taught-master degree programme, a major degree programme in Chinese History and Culture, two minor degree programmes in Chinese History and Culture and History of Science and Technology in China, respectively, and university-wide general education courses. The Department conducts quality research in topics related to Chinese history and Chinese culture, in a variety of broadly defined areas. The media of instruction are English and Putonghua. The University is now inviting applications and nominations for the post of Head of Department of Chinese History and Culture. The successful candidate will be appointed Chair Professor/Professor normally on regular terms of appointment (equivalent to tenured professorship), commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience, and will hold a concurrent headship appointment.  The concurrent headship appointment is normally for an aggregate period of six years in two three-year terms of office.  Other suitable candidate(s) from the search, if deemed appropriate by the University, may be appointed as Chair Professor/Professor if not Head of Department.

Job Functions

The position calls for a visionary academic leader with responsibilities of ensuring the smooth and successful operation and sustainable development of the Department.  Reporting directly to the Dean of Faculty of Humanities, the appointee will be required to:

(a)    provide effective leadership in the development of long-term strategies and plans of the Department, in alignment with the University’s Strategic Plan; and coach and empower subordinates so that they can accomplish planned objectives with world-class standards and in an effective and efficient manner;

(b)    ensure high-quality teaching as well as holistic development of the students, and align the Department’s programmes with the needs of the community;

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a)    a PhD degree in Chinese History and Culture or a relevant discipline, evidence of eminent scholarship and substantial relevant experience in a senior academic position;

(b)    attainment of an academic rank of full professor or above at an internationally recognised university;

(c)    a distinguished international reputation in research and scholarship, and demonstrated international leadership in any one or more of the specialist areas of Chinese Literature, Chinese History, Chinese Philosophy, Chinese Religion and Chinese Art;

(d)    a strong record in attracting competitive or/and interdisciplinary research funding;

(e)    a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching;

(f)     a global perspective, proven qualities of academic leadership and substantial administration / management experience, as well as demonstrated ability of building up a strong team of faculty members with different research and cultural backgrounds;

(g)    effective interpersonal communication skills and resources management skills, and excellent adaptability to changes and challenges; 

(h)    good knowledge of the higher education environment in the local and global context; and 

(i)     a high standard of personal integrity.

Setting:

The Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Vienna has world-leading researchers in Computer Science who pursue basic as well as applied research. The UniVie Doctoral School Computer Science (DoCS) builds an essential framework to foster excellence in research and teaching. Its main focus is on young prospective researchers eager to make an impact on both basic research as well as applied problems with collaborations across the University and beyond. The DoCS aims to provide these young researchers with the broad knowledge and expertise needed to perform Computer Science research at the highest achievable quality. The Doctoral School trains doctoral candidates in solving basic as well as applied research questions of high relevance.

The new work group by Prof. Lutz within the research group Workflow Systems and Technology has a broad research focus on topics of business analytics and operations research. The interdisciplinary group aims to develop novel approaches for solving complex decision problems and explaining human behavior in the usage of information technology. For this purpose, the group applies methods from reinforcement learning, explainable AI, natural language processing, and lab experiments. Applications should hence be interested in one or more of the aforementioned topics and/or methods. The particular topics will be determined based on the candidate’s skills and preferences.

Given its interdisciplinary focus, the group collaborates with researchers from both, computer science and business administration. The successful candidate can hence build on a strong network of fellow researchers with a strong knowledge of business analytics and operations research topics.

The appointment is for 4 years, whereby the employment contract is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 4 years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.
