FACULTY OPENINGS AT THE SINGAPORE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY The Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is Singapore’s first University of Applied Learning, offering industry-relevant degree programmes that prepare its graduates to be work- and future-ready professionals. We currently have positions available at all levels from Lecturer to Full Professor in Chemical Engineering or related disciplines. Priority skill areas include: process monitoring and control, industry 4.0, modeling, AI and ML applications for the process industries with particular emphasis on delivering step change improvements in process performance; Informatics for process and product development with a background in big data applications in biotechnology, process development or food technology; Quantitative scientific skills in physical chemistry/biochemistry/formulation to enable deeper process and product understanding in high value chemical, pharmaceutical biotechnology and/or food applications.   The successful candidate would be expected to teach core chemical of pharmaceutical engineering subjects and to develop applied research to support the continuing development of Singapore’s process industries. Requirements: A PhD in Chemical Engineering or related discipline Strong communication skills Aptitude for Applied Research leading to application of new knowledge to solve real-world problems A high level of digital literacy The following are desirable: Manufacturing, design or research experience in the process and related industries Knowledge and experience of Sustainability assessment as applied to the process industries Chartered or Professional Engineer status Successful candidates will join the Food, Chemical and Biotechnology (FCB) Cluster (one of five domain clusters in SIT), as members of a team of accomplished experts who are passionate about higher education and deeply involved with industry transformation through their applied research programmes.   Faculty in the FCB Cluster undertake funded industry-relevant research, teach courses in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutical Engineering and Food Technology as well as supervise graduate industry masters and doctorate students in relevant topics. The department has a thriving PhD programme and also hosts several Postdoctoral Fellows/Research Assistant Professors. Requirements Areas of Specialization: Philosophy of Science; Formal Epistemology; AI; or Philosophy of Biology, Chemistry, or Physics These posts arise in connection with a Senior Research Fellowship on ‘Philosophy of Contemporary and Future Science’ awarded to Professor Darrell Rowbottom, which runs from 2022–2027. Professor Rowbottom is now seeking Two Postdoctoral Fellows to join the project team over the course of one to two years. Details on the project, which involves scientists working with philosophers, can be found at www.pocfs.org. We are especially interested in candidates whose work connects with the natural sciences, and especially with recent developments therein (such as increased interdisciplinarity and the involvement of AI). However, we are open to considering other applicants with excellent research records and a clear, well-articulated vision of how they can contribute to the project. The appointee will work as part of the team headed by Professor Rowbottom. This will involve: (1) carrying out collaborative research (including with scientists); (2) authorship and co-authorship of papers suitable for publication in leading journals; (3) authorship and submission of derivative grant proposals to funding bodies; (4) organizing seminars, reading groups, workshops and other related research activities; (5) teaching courses at undergraduate or postgraduate levels; (6) performing occasional outreach activities (such as lectures aimed at the general public); and (7) managing/updating the project website. The teaching load will be one or two courses per year, distributed according to the departmental needs. English will be the language of instruction. Appointment The minimum annual salary for the posts will be 432,000 HKD (which corresponds to 44,000 GBP and 55,000 USD at current exchange rates). A gratuity of approximately 130,000 HKD will be paid after two years of service. As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT.  The primary responsibility of this role is to support and contribute to an industry innovation research project. The Research Engineer will work closely with the Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI, and the research team to develop deep learning-based computer vision algorithms and software for object detection, classification, and segmentation. Key Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project together with the PI, Co-PI, and research team to ensure timely achievement of project deliverables. Undertake the following specific responsibilities in the project: i. Develop, train, and optimise deep learning models for object detection, classification, and segmentation using real-world datasets. ii. Design and implement software modules to integrate the models into a working system prototype. iii. Perform data annotation. iv. Conduct experiments, analyse results, and iterate models for improved accuracy and efficiency. v. Prepare project documentation, technical reports, and academic publications. vi. Collaborate with industry partners and contribute to technology transfer efforts. Job Requirements 1. Possess strong technical knowledge and hands-on experience in: Deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) Deep learning models (e.g., YOLO, U-Net, EfficientNet, ResNet, FPN, Fast R-CNN) Computer vision techniques and algorithms Python and relevant libraries (e.g., PyQt, OpenCV, NumPy, scikit-learn), particularly for developing Windows desktop application software incorporating deep learning models 2. Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical/Electronic/Software Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s or PhD degree in relevant areas will be advantageous. 3. In collaboration with NEA, the Energy Efficiency Technology Centre (EETC) at Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) aims to be the leading technology innovation centre to support local industries on energy efficiency initiatives. EETC aspires to promote and develop energy efficiency capability and new technologies in the local energy ecosystem for industrial sectors. Key Responsibilities Work with EETC team members and companies on energy assessment projects in industrial systems Assist and/or co-develop training in energy efficiency in industrial systems to adult learners and students Mentor students in energy assessment projects to enhance their technical problem-solving skills. The learning activities may be classroom training, laboratory classes, projects. Development of learning activities / materials and assessment of students may form part of the responsibilities. Support research and industrial project work undertaken by the university, where opportunity arises. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure smooth execution of the energy audits. For those hired at senior levels, management responsibilities may be included. Manage and administer training programmes at the Centre.  Job Requirements Have hands-on experience in energy assessments and energy efficiency projects in some of the following areas: Industrial systems such as: Chilled Water System, Cooling and Refrigeration System, Mechanical Ventilation System, Heating system, Process Separation, Process Heat Integration, Process Compressor System, Steam and Condensate System, Compressed Air System, Motor Driven System, Power Distribution System and Electric Motors, Lighting System, Renewable Energy System, Process Specific system etc. Have a Degree in Engineering or equivalent. Have at least 5 years of project work experience in energy efficiency. Certified Energy Efficiency Opportunity Assessor or Singapore Certified Energy Manager will be advantageous. Licensed LEW (Technician grade or higher) will be advantageous for one of the positions. *Note: The incumbent will be appointed as Research Fellow / Research Engineer if successful.
