The Opportunity The School of Media, Film and Journalism is seeking to appoint an Associate Professor (Level D) or Professor (Level E) of Film and Screen to provide leadership and foster excellence in research, teaching, and professional engagement. This role will drive the School’s strategic vision, strengthen research culture, and advance its influence within the academic community, industry, and broader society. The role provides academic leadership through delivering lectures, tutorials, workshops, and practical sessions, developing and coordinating course materials, supervising postgraduate and PhD students, and conducting original research that produces high-quality publications and secures competitive grants. At Level E, you will also lead curriculum development, mentor early-career researchers, and foster strategic national and international industry, community, and academic partnerships. About You As the successful candidate, you will possess expertise in delivering high-quality teaching, developing innovative curricula, conducting impactful research, and producing a strong record of publications. You will demonstrate the ability to secure external research funding, supervise and mentor postgraduate students, and build productive academic collaborations. Ideally you will bring expertise in one or more of the following areas: environment and screen studies, streaming platforms or screen and cultural diversity.  For a Level D appointment, you will show advanced leadership, mentorship, and engagement within the discipline nationally and internationally. For a Level E appointment, you will exhibit executive leadership, success in generating research income, and the capacity to cultivate sustained industry, community, and global academic partnerships. Your working environment: As a postdoctoral research assistant at the Department of Romance Studies, you will collaborate in research and teaching as part of Prof. Dr. Judith Frömmer’s team. Our research focuses on French and Italian literature and media studies, with a historical emphasis on the Early Modern Period and Early Modernity and systematic focuses in the field of political theory and semantics, historical narrative research, and inter- and transmedial phenomena. Current research projects are dedicated to Machiavelli, the translation of early modern love poetry, and the poetics of minor characters. The team currently consists of a professor, a postdoctoral research assistant, a doctoral research assistant, an organisational assistant, and other staff members working on the third-party funded project “Petrarch in Global Translation: A Genealogy of Western Love.” The department is part of the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies and offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programs in five Romance languages and teacher-training courses for secondary schools in three languages (French, Italian and Spanish). More than 100 academic staff members and a few thousand students appreciate the diversity of subjects, internationality, outstanding research projects and interdisciplinary cooperation. The position is limited to five years. Your future tasks: Active participation in research, teaching & administration, which means: You develop an independent research profile. You are involved in research projects and scientific studies, particularly digital projects in your working group. You prepare and complete a publication-ready habilitation or an equivalent qualification. You hold courses independently within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
