The University of Melbourne invites Expressions of Interest (EOIs) for the 2026 Early Career Researcher Fellowships, with appointments commencing in 2027. This annual round encompasses three competitive schemes: the McKenzie, Mary Lugton, and Puzey Postdoctoral Fellowships. ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP SCHEMES McKenzie Postdoctoral Fellowships The McKenzie scheme supports outstanding early-career researchers and offers up to sixteen fellowships per year, with at least two reserved for Indigenous researchers. Mary Lugton Postdoctoral Fellowships This year, the scheme supports outstanding early‑career researchers specifically in the fields of Science and Engineering, enabling them to build research momentum and establish the foundations for long‑term academic careers. Puzey Postdoctoral Fellowships In 2026, this scheme supports Australian early‑career researchers who aspire to pursue research careers within the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology (FEIT). FELLOWSHIP BENEFITS Three-year full-time appointment at Level A.6 plus superannuation Up to $25,000 in project funding Access to mentoring and ECR development programs Commencement between 4 January and 30 June 2027 ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS General Eligibility Applicants must have completed all PhD requirements in a discipline relevant to their application from a university in any country, including Australia and the University of Melbourne no later than 7 May 2026. PhD requirements must be completed by the EOI no earlier than 1 April 2023. Current UoM academic staff may apply if casual, fixed-term, or CRC. An EOI will not be accepted if applicants have not met the PhD requirements by the EOI closing date. You will: work closely with Innovate UK senior leadership to align planned activity with the strategic research, innovation, and skills priorities of Innovate UK and UKRI. work alongside IUK senior leadership, delivery partners and key stakeholders build relationships across UKRI, accelerators, investors, incubators and the wider university spin out ecosystem across London, southern England and southern Wales. build long-term partnerships with key regional and national funding organisations to maximise opportunities for external funding, long-term financial sustainability, and delivery of commercial outcomes. Lead strategic level projects from initial creation to impact outcomes at the end.  Work with early stage deep-tech and life science university spinouts, supporting them to establish and grow, and help them as they secure funding, build their teams and enter the market. Work at a national level on the Innovation-to-Commercialisation of University Research (ICURe) programme and lead on building a national ICURe alumni engagement strategy. About You This role is a senior, strategic level role where you will bring networks across the whole of our region, and have excellent contacts with partners such as UKRI, PSREs and nationally focused accelerators. Regional government economic development contacts would also be valuable You should have substantial experience of working with investment and with spin out companies. You should be self-starting and able to develop relationships swiftly You should have the ability to work successfully from home but also be willing to travel regularly within the southern region and London, as well as occasional national travel. Knowledge in Advanced Physical Models such as the ones typical used in Many Body physics, Superconducting Quantum field theories and RF Quantum Optics. Interests in Exploring novel kinds of Quantum Sensors such as Superconducting Quantum Interferometers and Cavity Magnonics Interferometers. Ability to maintain and develop tools for more advanced experiments by using COMSOL, Python, Julia, MATLAB and other software's packages.
