About Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

Basic information and contact details for Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati

institution

Established in 1994, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is one of the six prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology. Boasting eleven departments and three centres for interdisciplinary research, it has a campus on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra, near the city of Guwahati in eastern India.

Research at the institute spans the full range from the highly theoretical to industry focused, covering traditional physical sciences as well as newer disciplines like nanotechnology, biotechnology and artificial intelligence. The university also conducts research in areas including manufacturing and product design. It places great emphasis on research sponsored by industry.

Students at the institute enjoy access to a wide range of sports including athletics, cricket, hockey and basketball. There are multiple clubs for sports-mad students to join. The more arts-minded are also catered to, with photography, music, cinema and dance clubs as well. The student welfare office also promotes activities to boost students’ soft skills and English language. This is all organised by the gymkhama, the university’s democratic student body, which organises workshops, seminars and events the year round.

The institute offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral programmes. Although the focus is on technology and engineering, it also teaches a master’s programme in development studies, and doctoral programmes in humanities and the social sciences.

The institute also boasts an alumni association with chapters across India – and in the San Francisco Bay area. It also runs a mentorship programme. One of the institute’s centres, the Centre for Career Development, helps graduates take the first steps of their careers, with assistance preparing for interviews and written tests.
