Founded in 1909, the Indian Institute of Science (IIS) is situated in Bangalore, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state.
The university has one undergraduate programme - the bachelor of science (research) degree which lasts four years. All students take modules in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology and humanities and there is a strong emphasis on engineering. In the final year students undertake their own research oriented project supervised by an academic. Submission of applications takes place between February and March.
There are also master’s courses in management studies, technology and design as well as PhD programmes. Research students make up more than 70 per cent of the entire student body at IIS.
The university is made up of six main departments: biological sciences, chemical sciences, electrical sciences, interdisciplinary research, mechanical sciences, and physical and mathematical sciences. There are also individual centres for brain research, scientific and industrial consultancy, and sponsored schemes and projects.
Academics at the institute conduct research in several areas of science and technology including space science, material science and engineering, environmental and atmospheric sciences, endocrinology and genetic engineering. The university has also identified three areas for upcoming research: genomics, nano-sciences and mathematics.
More than 75 scholars at the institute have won the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology (SSB).
The university’s gymkhana – its sports and culture centre – is spread over 26 acres and home to 27 clubs. There is also a health centre for staff, students and their families and, in 2001, the institution established a Centre for Counselling and Support.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF ROBOTICS The School of Robotics is one of the seven industry-themed Schools in the XJTLU Entrepreneur College (Taicang). Each School consists of an Education, Research and Development Institute (ERDI) for teaching and research collaboration, a one-stop School Office providing professional services to support student administration and activities, members of staff, and industry partners, and an affiliated School Joint-Venture Company jointly established by XJTLU and the School’s partner for industry-embedded teaching, learning, practical, and other activities. The governance of the School is through a School Council. The Dean of School oversees the School Management Team as well as contributing to the leadership of the college. The School of Robotics is jointly developed by the University and an industry partner – Siasun, to deliver the industry-themed programme(s). The first degree programme that the School has launched for the Academic Year 2019/2020 is BEng Intelligent Robotics Engineering with Contemporary Entrepreneurship. ABOUT THE DIRECTOR OF ERDI Working with the Dean of School, the main duties of this position include: Lead the design and development of syntegrative projects in schools in particular the integration across programmes or even across Schools. Engage actively with new educational models and embrace innovative, interactive, technology-enhanced learning, teaching, and assessment approaches. Create, nurture, and support a healthy industry-focused research environment, with agreed annual research outcomes and expectations agreed with the School Dean and wider Entrepreneur College. Lead and manage the School’s business engagement initiatives with a view to building an extensive portfolio of potential industry collaborative partnerships, working with the College’s Business Development team. Working with the Business Development team, identify and implement strategies to maximise research income, with a focus on business/industry, and develop syntegrative projects from industry that leads the learning and teaching in schools. Drive an emphasis on impact-creation through sustainable and unique value proposition in improving the School’s funded quality research and innovation and/or knowledge exchange activities, with a focus on industry. Support innovative cross-disciplinary research and become an ambassador for the School in promoting cross-boundary research and teaching activities through Centre of Excellence. We are currently seeking to hire a Senior Engineer Lead to take primary technical responsibility for the design, build, integration, and field deployment of software systems for ground robots operating in extreme field environments. Working under the broad direction of the Chief Investigator, you will design and maintain the core software framework, autonomy framework, and data pipelines for ruggedised autonomous platforms intended for sustained operation in rugged outdoor terrain across multiple application domains. This is a senior individual contributor role. You will work autonomously on the software scope of the platform, with technical assurance provided by the Senior Software Technical Lead at defined design reviews, and with close collaboration alongside the Mechatronics Engineers and Postdoctoral Research Fellows whose autonomy research integrates with the framework you build. The appointment is offered initially for 12 months. The programme is funded across multiple years and there is strong potential for extension subject to performance and continued funding.
