Imam Reza International University was named after an early Shi-ite Imam. It is located in Mashhad, a noted holy city. It started life in 1999 offering courses in physical education, and library and information science.
It has grown to be the largest private university in Iran, with a roll of more than 8,000 students spread across Faculties of Physical Education and Sports Science, Architecture and Urban Planning, Technology and Engineering, Administration Science, Literature and Humanities, and Education Science and Psychology.
There are three campuses. Asrar, home to the Innovation Centre, Rizvan campus and the Ghadir campus hosts international students and open learning.
International students, first admitted in 2003, now number around 500, half of them female. All are offered access to the Centre for Teaching Persian to non-Persian Speakers preparatory programmes.
Recent international agreements have focussed on Iraqi partners.
