Description The Center for Translational Medical Devices (CENTMED) at New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD) seeks to recruit a postdoctoral research associate to join this new initiative focusing on designing and developing novel medical devices for ultimate human use. CENTMED oversees a variety of exciting projects developing new treatments and diagnostics for cardiovascular, neurologic, and metabolic diseases. The successful applicant will join a number of fascinating projects on engineering novel approaches to modulate physiology and neural activity in the brain, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, and other peripheral organs. These projects have a high potential for translation towards treating a variety of neurologic and metabolic disorders. These approaches entail device design and manufacturing, drug conjugation, neuroscience, and preclinical model experiments. The candidate will work in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment alongside PhD-level engineers and scientists, graduate students, and full-time researchers. They will also have the chance to contribute to other projects within CENTMED, working on cutting-edge initiatives spanning metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurologic diseases. This position offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact on next-generation surgical technologies, bridging the gap between engineering innovation and clinical application. Applicants must have a PhD in an engineering or biomedical-related field. Excellent experimental skills relevant to the project (in particular device design and fabrication, drug conjugation, and in vitro and in vivo experimentation) are required. Proficiency in English is required. About the team: The Computational Materials Physics group develops and applies quantum mechanics-based methods for the description of condensed matter systems, including the successful software package VASP (Vienna ab-initio Simulation Package). We focus on the development of methods to solve the many-electron Schrödinger equation for fermions and bosons with high accuracy and on the application of these methods to problems in the physics of oxides, semiconductors, metals and their surfaces. Machine learning methods are used to close the complexity gap. Currently, the group consists of three full professors, one associate professor, 6 postdocs and about 15 PhD and 7 master students. Computing time is available on our local cluster and on the Austrian Scientific Cluster, a supercomputer shared by Austria's major universities. This position will be focused in the Infection, Immunity and Inflammation Theme, which brings together both basic science and clinician researchers, with the goal of generating the most comprehensive definition of key determinants that underpin pathogen driven and autoimmune diseases and host immunological responses to these conditions. Our research focuses on the interplay between the host immune system and a wide range of medically important human diseases. By understanding the mechanisms that enable the development of both infectious and non-infectious diseases, as we all as the inflammatory conditions that develop, we can provide a rational basis for the development of novel treatments, immunotherapies, vaccines and other preventative measures to lessen the impact of such diseases on the human population. Members of the Infection, Immunity and Inflammation theme teach students at both the undergraduate and postgraduate level and bring their research experience to these teaching programs with the goal of fostering the development of the next generation of research leaders.
