International Faculty and World-class Programmes

Guided by a strong international team of over 90 faculty members from diverse cultural backgrounds, the SHTM offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Hotel Management and/or Tourism Management leading up to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Doctor of Hotel and Tourism Management (D.HTM), Master of Science (MSc) and Bachelor of Science (BSc).

State-of-the-art teaching and research facilities

Wholly owned by PolyU and an extension of the SHTM, Hotel ICON is a unique teaching and research hotel offering a fully integrated teaching and learning approach to education. Officially opened in September 2011, Hotel ICON is located in the same building complex as the SHTM campus.

As the world's first co-located, co-lead programme offered in a teaching and research hotel, Hotel ICON provides a dynamic environment to SHTM students who are privileged to use the hotel’s many opportunities for learning and research as a launch pad for their dreams. The School’s vision is to see them rise to become leaders of hotels, hospitality businesses and the tourism industry globally.

The Che-woo Lui Hotel and Tourism Research Centre houses a range of hotel and tourism management related reference and teaching materials, such as books, journals, magazines, statistical reports and conference proceedings to support research, teaching and learning functions of the School.

Tan Siu Lin Innovation Hub is equipped with state-of-the-art digital equipment and specialised software for the hospitality and tourism industry, ensuring an inspirational and flexible learning environment in which students are empowered to reach their full potentials. It ensures that SHTM students have experience using the latest technology available in the industry.

Bistro 1979 is a multi-function student-operated restaurant unit providing a “real-world” restaurant setting for students to build on the skill-sets required in F&B industry. It is also the venue for the Catering Studies Dining Society which welcomes their members and their guests. The training restaurant seats 66 persons, offering lunches and dinners during the semester according to the academic timetable.

Vinoteca Lab seats 41 persons. It is used for a variety of classes including wine appreciation. Students are taught a range of topics, from basic wine fundamentals to advanced regional and international wine knowledge and specialist skills in the F&B industry. Workshops organised by the Food and Wine Academy, an initiative by the SHTM and Hotel ICON, also take place here.

Research Excellence @ SHTM

The School's academic staff are very active professionally and have gained international recognition for their scholarship and research. SHTM staff members have published regularly in leading journals, and are widely represented on the editorial boards of more than 25 major journals. In addition, four international scholarly journals in the field of hospitality and tourism are edited from the School itself:

With the establishment of Hotel ICON, the SHTM's leadership role in hospitality research has been enhanced.  Research projects with different foci have already been implemented in the hotel. Three dedicated guestrooms – "Tomorrow's Guestrooms" – have been set up to facilitate more in-depth research into the application of advanced concepts in the field of hotel management for the advancement of the entire industry.

In the pursuit of research excellence, the SHTM established the Hospitality and Tourism Research Centre (HTRC) to further consolidate its research prowess, which has long been recognised as one of the School’s significant strengths. With a view to bridging the gap between hospitality and tourism theory and industry practice, the HTRC supports academic research for the advancement and development of hospitality and tourism knowledge on topics of importance to industry performance. It is a unique research-based platform with an expansive network of hospitality and tourism academics from the School and partner institutions, along with leading industry executives.

SHTM+ICON Consultancy

Combining the research prowess of the SHTM and the practical experience and endeavour of Hotel ICON, the SHTM+ICON Consultancy is established to offer professional hospitality related consultancy services to industry worldwide.

The mission of SHTM+ICON Consultancy is to engineer knowledge transfer to hospitality industry and educational institutes. The knowledge transfer includes management know-how, creative solutions, experiences in a practical setting, and capability of maintaining sustainable growth.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on a research project, funded by Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE), where you will be part of the research team to develop a scalable and comprehensive framework for formal verification of quantum programs. The framework consists of the following deliverables: Intermediate Language. We plan to develop an intermediate language to model quantum programs. The intermediate language would be complete to describe all the desired characteristics of quantum computing while at the same time simple enough to be understood by most programmers. Formal Verification Framework. We plan to develop a comprehensive framework to verify the correctness of quantum programs written in the proposed intermediate language. Mechanization. We plan to mechanize the formal framework using state-of-the-art theorem provers such as Coq or Isabelle/HOL. Proof Automation. We plan to develop formal methods for automatic reasoning that can be materialized into commercial tools. Responsibilities Participate in and manage the research project with Principal Investigator (PI) and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Undertake these responsibilities in the project: develop an intermediate language to write quantum programs. develop a comprehensive framework to verify the correctness of quantum programs written in our intermediate language. mechanize the verification framework using state-of-the-art theorem provers such as Coq or Isabelle/HOL. develop formal methods for automatic reasoning that can be materialized into commercial tools. Carry out Risk Assessment, and ensure compliance with Work, Safety and Health Regulations. Coordinate procurement and liaison with vendors/suppliers. Work independently, as well as within a team, to ensure proper operation and maintenance of equipment. Job Requirements Have relevant competence in the areas of formal methods (including theorem proving and model checking), quantum computing, and software analysis/verification. Have a degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or related areas. Possessing a Master degree will be advantageous. Knowledge of quantum circuit design and quantum program analysis/verification will be advantageous. Job Purpose The Professional Officers Division (POD) houses a centralized pool of academic staff under the Professional Officers scheme. Professional Officers come with specialised and deep technical skills acquired through extensive industry experience. They form the talent pool which brings a much-needed industry perspective to student learning. They facilitate applied learning and applied research in SIT, complementing the academic expertise of the faculty to bring industry practices and applications into the curriculum. Professional Officers leverage on their industry experiences to create authentic learning environments, where discovery and innovation take place. They act as coaches and mentors to students during practical learning activities such as laboratory sessions, Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Professional Officers could also lead or work with faculty on industry innovation projects to provide solutions to the industry. In addition to their role in applied learning and applied research, Professional Officers manage the centralised laboratory facilities and resources in SIT. With Technical Officers, laboratory safety professionals, and administrators in POD, they jointly develop central policies and processes for the safe and seamless operation of laboratories in SIT. Key Responsibilities Design and teach labs & practice modules. Mentor students in Capstone Projects and the Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP). Lead or co-lead innovation projects with industry. Manage labs and equipment to support academic programmes and applied research. Ensure safety in labs. Job Requirements A good degree in Electronics, Mechatronics, Software Engineering, or a related field. Masters, PhD and/or relevant professional certifications would be advantageous. Deep technical specialist with 10 or more years of working experience in Automation, Robotics, Autonomous Systems, or related areas in development would be preferred. Experience in following areas is highly desirable: Hands-on experience in electronics/electrical. Programming of Microcontrollers and embedded systems. Description As part of the Electrical Engineering program of the Engineering Division and the Center of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at NYU Abu Dhabi the group of Prof. Kostas J. Kyriakopoulos seeks to improve the autonomy of Field Robotic systems by fusing control theoretic and machine intelligence approaches. Formal models are directly applied in real experimental facilities. Marine Robotics is our current emphasis, without excluding candidates with prior experience on Aerial or Ground Systems. We are seeking a Post-Doctoral associate to join our expanding team and make significant contributions to the field. The researcher is expected to have (i) strong engineering skills to find innovative and cost-effective means to improve our research, and (ii) exemplary passion and motivation to enhance our multidisciplinary research at the intersection of control theory and machine intelligence. Methodologies of interest include: Robot modelling, Nonlinear and Optimal control, Reinforcement learning, and Data-driven modeling and control. The Post-Doctoral associate will be based at NYU Abu Dhabi and will directly report to Prof. K.J.Kyriakopoulos in close collaboration with other researchers, PhD students, and undergraduate research assistants. The Post-Doctoral associate will engage with our regular collaborators at local institutions in the UAE and abroad. Key responsibilities Conduct high-quality and innovative research primarily focused on Control theory and ML methodologies for Field Robotics; Support the supervisor in developing and implementing the research agenda; Reproduce results of the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods; Design and implement experiments on real platforms operating outdoors, to compare our proposed work with SOTA baselines; Contribute to the preparation of manuscripts for publication in high-impact journals and conferences; Create, maintain, and document high-quality research code for reproducibility; and Collaborate with scientists within the NYU Global Network and in Abu Dhabi. Applicants should possess a medical qualification registrable with the Medical Council of Hong Kong, and a higher professional qualification of Specialty Fellowship of the relevant Hong Kong College under the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine or equivalent. They should have demonstrated accomplishment in teaching of medical undergraduates, and organization and development of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Those with an established research record, substantial achievements in research publications and a track record of successful grant applications would have an advantage.
