Hangzhou Dianzi University (HDU) is a teaching and research institution renowned for its programmes in electronic science and technology, engineering and information technology as well as management and accounting. It is located in Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang province, just 150km from Shanghai (which is only 50 minutes away by train).
The university began life as the Hangzhou Aviation Industry, Finance and Economics School, which was founded in 1956. After various name changes as it evolved, it was granted university status in 2004.
Across its four campuses, HDU has more than 28,000 students and over 2,200 staff members.
HDU has established a large number of English-taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
About 40 per cent of HDU’s faculty and 12 per cent of its students have studied abroad. It hosts about 200 visiting scholars and some 1,000 international students a year.
HDU has established relationships with about 50 universities across some 40 countries and regions. Its international links span faculty and student exchanges, research collaborations, cooperation on international courses and more.
The university is deeply embedded in the economic fabric of Hangzhou, a hub of innovation with a thriving ecosystem of small and medium-sized enterprises. Hangzhou houses the headquarters of the e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, whose founder, Jack Ma, is an HDU alumnus.
