In line with the strategic development of the University and to lead the development of the aeronautical and aviation engineering discipline in teaching and research activities, the Department of Aeronautical and Aviation Engineering was established in the Faculty of Engineering. Duties

The appointee will be required to:

(a)    initiate, lead and participate in scholarly research in his/her areas of expertise and be active in research leading to quality journal publications and in bidding for external research grants and applied research projects;

(b)    conduct research in satellite and space engineering and contribute to the development of the Department’s research strengths;

(c)    supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects and theses;

(d)    undertake teaching duties at various levels in the area of satellite and space engineering;

(e)    engage in programme/curriculum planning, development and administration;

(f)     undertake relevant administrative duties; and

(g)    perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Unit or his delegates.

Qualifications

Applicants should have:

(a)    a PhD degree in Engineering with expertise in satellite and space engineering, including but not limited to spacecraft dynamics and control, payload and instrumentation, space robots, spacecraft design and tests, space technology applications such as navigation, remote sensing, and communications;

(b)    experience in acquiring external research funding including national and international funding bodies and industries;

(c)    strong commitment to excellence in teaching and research; 

(d)    effective classroom teaching skills and good interpersonal skills; and

(e)    excellent communication, organisational and leadership skills, as well as strong cooperation skills with the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.

A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The University of Surrey is excited to be launching the CAU-UOS Joint Institute in partnership with China Agricultural University (CAU) in Beijing, with the first student cohort commencing in September 2026. The Institute will deliver Surrey dual-degree programmes in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Electronic Engineering, enabling students to gain qualifications from both institutions while studying within a dynamic international learning environment. This is a fixed-term appointment for up to four years and is based in Beijing, China, with teaching primarily taking place at China Agricultural University's campus. The International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) is a high-profile joint venture between The University of Western Australia (UWA) and Curtin University, supported by the Western Australian Government. ICRAR is one of Australia’s largest astronomy institutions and a leading participant in the international Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. The Centre has secured further funding through to 2030, supporting ambitious research programs across astronomy, engineering and advanced technologies.

The Astrophotonics Program brings together researchers from astronomy, physics and engineering to develop and deploy advanced photonic technologies. About the opportunity


	Conduct research and development on atmospheric laser communication links and advanced photonic systems for terrestrial and space applications.
	Design, build and test experimental hardware, undertake atmospheric modelling and simulations, and analyse research data to evaluate system performance.
	Support laboratory activities, field trials and technology deployments in collaboration with academic, industry, government and defence partners.
	Publish high-quality research outcomes in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national and international conferences.

About you 


	A PhD or close to completing a PHD in physics, astronomy, engineering, photonics, optics, telecommunications or a closely related discipline, with a demonstrated track record of research publication in peer-reviewed journals.
	Experience conducting experimental and/or computational research in a relevant scientific or engineering field, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
	Knowledge or experience in areas such as free-space optical communications, laser systems, atmospheric propagation modelling, photonics or optical engineering.
	Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams and build productive relationships with academic, industry and government collaborators.
	A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion, with the ability to contribute positively to student supervision, team activities and the broader research community.

Role Description

We welcome applications from talented and motivated researchers with expertise in X-ray and synchrotron imaging to play a leading role in cutting-edge research exploring the structure and function of complex environmental systems.

About the Role

This is a Research Fellow role embedded within a major externally funded research programme in soil science. You will lead the delivery of synchrotron and X-ray imaging components of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, delivering advanced imaging research to understand how pore-scale structure and mineral-carbon interactions control the storage and movement of organic carbon across the soil–bedrock continuum.

The role will involve significant periods based at Diamond Light Source, where you will design and deliver experiments using techniques such as X-ray micro-computed tomography and X-ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES). You will also undertake laboratory-based imaging and develop analytical workflows to process and interpret complex 2D and 3D datasets.

Working closely with the research lead and an interdisciplinary team, you will contribute to research across multiple work packages, including investigating structural changes during weathering and the development of pore networks and carbon distribution during early soil formation. You will be responsible for the design and delivery of imaging experiments, integration of imaging outputs with biological and biogeochemical datasets, and dissemination of findings through high-quality scientific publications and presentations.

About You

You will be educated to doctoral level in Physics, Materials Science, Engineering, Geoscience, Environmental Science or a related discipline, with a strong focus on lab-based or synchrotron CT imaging. You will have experience in designing and delivering imaging experiments, working with complex datasets, and interpreting imaging outputs.

You will have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and be confident working independently while contributing effectively to an interdisciplinary team. Experience of working at large-scale research facilities such as synchrotrons.

You will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to a range of audiences. You should be able to manage multiple priorities and deliver high-quality outputs to agreed deadlines. Willingness to spend periods working at Diamond Light Source and to travel as required is essential.
