Universitas Swadaya Gunung Jati, formerly known as Unswagati, is a private university located in Cirebon, West Java, Indonesia. It was established in 1961 by the Yayasan Pendidikan Swadaya Gunung Jati educational foundation, initially with two faculties, law and economics, and around 300 students. The university was founded to provide help provide access to higher education for students in Cirebon, who otherwise had to travel to nearby cities such as Jakarta.
UGJ’s main campus is located in Cirebon, a city known for its historic palaces, including Keraton Kasepuhan and Keraton Kanoman, as well as the Great Mosque of Cirebon and Sunyaragi Cave. Its first permanent campus was established in 1967, with the university expanding during the following decades through the addition of teacher education, social and political sciences, agriculture and engineering. It now operates several campuses across Cirebon.
The university has seven faculties covering law, economics, social and political sciences, education and science, agriculture, engineering and medicine, alongside postgraduate education. Programmes include law, management, accounting, public administration, communication, Indonesian language and literature, mathematics, English, agribusiness, agrotechnology, civil engineering and medicine. The Faculty of Medicine incorporates local knowledge and tradition into its medical education, with a focus on community-based healthcare.
UGJ’s identity is closely connected to the cultural heritage of Sunan Gunung Jati, one of the prominent figures associated with the spread of Islam in Java.
