Faculty of Medicine at the University of Helsinki invites applications for a fixed-term position of Doctoral Researcher in the field of Neurovascular Biology from 01.02.2026 until 30.08.2029, or according to agreement. The Korhonen research group at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Helsinki, and the Wihuri Research Institute is recruiting a doctoral researcher for a PhD project in neurovascular biology. Our group studies neurovascular communication and its impact on central nervous system (CNS) function. The PhD project will examine how the vasculature regulates the function of oligodendrocyte lineage cells and CNS health in aging and repair, using advanced in vivo and in vitro models combined with cutting-edge molecular, imaging, and transcriptomic approaches. About the Role The doctoral researcher will work within a multidisciplinary environment integrating vascular biology, neuroscience, and glial cell biology. The work will be conducted at Biomedicum Helsinki on the Meilahti campus. The successful candidate will: Plan and carry out independent and collaborative experiments using in vivo mouse models and complementary in vitro/ex vivo approaches Employ molecular, histological, imaging, transcriptomic, and proteomic techniques Collaborate closely with internal and international partners Present research findings at seminars and conferences, and prepare scientific manuscripts Qualifications We are looking for a highly motivated candidate with: A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in cell biology, molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field Strong interest in vascular or neurovascular biology, glial cell biology, or CNS repair mechanisms Prior experience in one or more of the following: in vivo mouse work, cell culture, molecular biology, microscopy, transcriptomics, proteomics, or related methods Excellent communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an international team The appointee should either already have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment. The Salo research group at the HiLIFE – Institute of Biotechnology, University of Helsinki, is seeking a collaborative and curiosity-driven Postdoctoral Researcher in structural biology. The position begins in early 2026 and is initially for 2 years, with the possibility of extension. The salary scale is 3 500–4 000 € per month, depending on the candidate’s experience and merits.     About the project and group    The Nanoscale Architecture Lipid Flux – Veijo Salo research group aims to uncover the molecular logic of lipid flux and organelle biogenesis in metabolic health and disease. We use state-of-the-art approaches in cell biology, imaging, and in-cell structural biology to reveal nanoscale membrane architectures that drive lipid flux in their native context. The group operates across two interconnected sites: the University of Helsinki and Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. For more information, please visit our website.    This project will focus on structural and biochemical approaches to understand membrane-associated protein assemblies involved in lipid homeostasis. Depending on the candidate’s expertise and interest, the work may include protein and organelle purification, biochemical reconstitution, and single-particle cryo-EM analysis of membrane protein complexes, as well as structural–functional assays in human cells. The exact project will be developed together with the selected researcher. This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative project funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, (FCDO) Innovate Ukraine Programme. The project: Miscanthus Energy for a Resilient and Inclusive Transition (MERIT) aim is to increase Miscanthus biomass production in Ukraine. Ukraine has over 2 million hectares of arable land left unused due to war-related contamination. MERIT aims to use Miscanthus to: Produce renewable biomass for decentralised heating, biogas, and energy generation and restore damaged and abandoned land through phytoremediation. You will work on the Biofuel Crop Miscanthus, leading studies to emulate specific soil toxicity states and identifying variety specific resistance to toxins, and compartmentalisation of toxins in plant structures. Key tasks will include: (i); establishing and monitoring trials on campus and establishing field sites with local partners (ii); quantifying contents of soil and plant toxicity (iii); measuring plant morphological and physiological responses (iv); collating comprehensive data sets from project partners and undertaking appropriate Genotype x Environment x Treatment analysis (v); writing academic publications. A small part of the project will investigate cold tolerance in specific varieties. You may also be able to assist across the broader projects within the group.A proven ability to undertake and lead plant biology field research activities is essential, and to publish in international peer-reviewed journals is desirable. You will also have an enthusiastic and co-operative attitude, well-suited to working as part of a team, supervising and advising more junior members of the team on occasion, and contributing to essential field / laboratory / project management tasks. There is the opportunity for you to apply your own research interests within this project to broaden the scope of the study beyond the project deliverables.
