The Trustworthy Machine Learning group is recruiting a PhD student funded by TeamPerMed Center for Data-Enriched Personalised Medicine. You will work with Professor Antti Honkela. You will develop privacy-preserving techniques for personalised medicine applications, covering both health record data and genetic data. The work will be based on differential privacy, that allows mathematically proving privacy preservation. The developed methods will be applied to real-world problems in collaboration with domain experts at the University of Tartu and the University of Helsinki. A start date in early September 2026 is ideal but it is flexible. The application deadline is 14 June 2026 (at 23:59 UTC +3). Requirements A master's degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related topic Prior experience in machine learning and differential privacy is desirable Excellent English skills In addition, according to the system of the University of Helsinki, all doctoral researchers belong to a doctoral programme. The Algorithmic Bioinformatics Lab is recruiting a PhD student funded by TeamPerMed Center for Data-Enriched Personalised Medicine. You will work with Professor Veli Mäkinen. The general scope of the work is studying compressed data structures and applying them in the development of scalable algorithms to genome analysis tasks. More specifically, this position is devoted to studying haplotype phasing and imputation with noisy data. The noisy data is resulting from approaches to protect privacy of genomic content of individuals. The position offers collaboration opportunities with domain experts at the University of Tartu, as well as with experts in differential privacy (Assistant Professor Teresa Anna Steiner at the Univ. Southern Denmark and Professor Antti Honkela at the Univ. Helsinki) and in statistical and computational genomics (FIMM Group Leader Simone Rubinacci at the Univ. Helsinki). Schemes of Service: Research Division: Infocomm Technology Employment Type: Fixed Term As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The primary responsibility of this role is to deliver on an industry innovation research project where you will be part of the research team to design, develop and evaluate schemes for quantum key distribution networks and systems. Key Responsibilities: Participate in the research project with Principal Investigator (PI), Co-PI and the research team members to ensure all project deliverables are met. Design, develop and evaluate solutions given problem statements in key generation and relaying across multiple hops in quantum key distribution (QKD) networks. Demonstrate functionality of solutions. Document and publish the project works. Job Requirements: Have relevant knowledge in the areas of quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, e.g., BB84, E91, MDI, TF, etc. If there is no prior experience, it is acceptable if the candidate can self-learn the knowledge within a short time (e.g., 1 month). Have a degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent. Possessing a Master’s or PhD degree will be advantageous. Experience in designing, developing and evaluating solutions for a given problem statement using simulation tools, such as Matlab, Python, etc., and documenting and publishing the works in technical reports or papers. Knowledge of network placement optimization for various topologies, e.g., Erdos-Renyi random network, scale-free, small world, etc, will be advantageous. key Competencies: Understand existing quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols, networks and systems. Able to perform resource placement optimization in computer/communication networks. Proficient in technical writing and analytical skills. Show strong initiative and take ownership of work. Able to work in a team with members of diverse backgrounds.
