Armstrong State University is a public university located in Savannah, Georgia. Its programs are grounded in the liberal arts.
Armstrong Junior College was founded in 1935 by the mayor of Savannah, Thomas Gamble, who believed that investing in education would benefit the local community and economy during the difficulties of the Great Depression.
The Junior College became the Armstrong College of Savannah, joining the University System of Georgia in 1959, and beginning to offer full four-year courses in 1964. Soon after, it moved to its current site, and continued to expand its student numbers and buildings. In 1996 became a university. Since 2014, it has been officially named Armstrong State University.
Armstrong State University provides four-year undergraduate and graduate degrees, as well as doctoral degrees. Students may choose from a comprehensive range of more than 100 programs provided by the Colleges of Education, Health Professions, Liberal Arts, and Science and Technology, and its Graduate Studies program. It also offers interdisciplinary courses – including a course in cyber crime – and online courses. Armstrong State University’s Office of International Education supports students with a range of study abroad programs.
Student interests, welfare and safety are looked after by a dedicated University Police Department, student health and counselling centres, and an elected Student Government Association.
The university’s main campus is an arboretum, and is used as an outdoor laboratory by students of Botany, Environmental Studies and other disciplines. Student facilities include a nearly 1000 seat concert hall, a large, well-equipped Recreation and Aquatic Center and a modern, sustainable Student Union, which boasts a with a ballroom, cinema and bookshop.
The Armstrong State University intercollegiate sports teams are called the Pirates. Their popular mascot, Captain George, makes appearances at children’s birthday parties and other local events.

As a University of Applied Learning, SIT works closely with industry in our research pursuits. Our research staff will have the opportunity to be equipped with applied research skill sets that are relevant to industry demands while working on research projects in SIT. The Research Engineer (Microgrid Controller Design) will contribute to a one-year applied research project funded by the Singapore Army, focusing on the development of a mobile DC microgrid for military tactical applications. The role involves designing and implementing advanced control algorithms to coordinate multiple energy sources including battery energy storage systems (BESS), solar PV, and diesel generators, and dynamically assign grid-forming roles under varying operating conditions. The engineer will develop, simulate, and test controller logic using MATLAB/Simulink or similar environments, analyse performance across diverse scenarios, and document results for technical reporting. This position is ideal for candidates with a strong foundation in control systems, software development, and power or energy management applications. Key Responsibilities Participate in the research project to design a mobile DC microgrid controller for military tactical applications. Develop control algorithms for dynamic master selection, coordinating BESS, PV, diesel generators, and other sources. Implement predictive, rule-based, or optimisation-based control strategies using MATLAB/Simulink, Python, or embedded software tools. Integrate controller logic with the microgrid model and validate performance under different simulated conditions. Any other ad-hoc duties assigned by supervisor. Job Requirements Bachelor’s degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field from a recognised university. Strong programming skills in MATLAB/Simulink, Python, C/C++, or similar environments. Understanding of control systems, power electronics, or energy management strategies. Experience in microgrid controller design is advantageous. Familiarity with BESS control strategies, SOC management, or optimisation algorithms preferred. Support supervision of capstone project students involved in the project. Ability to implement and test algorithmic logic using simulation tools.
