About the University of Göttingen

Basic information and contact details for the University of Göttingen

institution

Regarded as one of the most prestigious universities in Germany, the University of Göttingen is located in the historic Saxon town of the same name, in the centre of Germany.

Established in 1737, the university – informally known as Georgia Augusta – is home to about 26,000 students, 11% of who are international.

A research-led university, Göttingen has associations with over 40 Nobel Prize winners, including physicists Max Born, Werner Heisenberg, Max Planck and Otto Stern. The Brothers Grimm both taught at Göttingen and its alumni includes the statesman Otto von Bismarck, philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, poet Heinrich Heine and sociologist Max Weber.

Napoleon once said of Göttingen that it belonged ‘to the whole of Europe.' It was founded by England's King George II in his capacity as Elector of Hanover, and the university’s library, founded in 1734, was the first comprehensive academic library of European standing.

In the first part of the twentieth century, Göttingen was regarded as the centre of the mathematical world – a position it lost in 1933 when more than 50 of its faculty were forced to leave the University under Nazi rule.

After World War II, Göttingen was the first university in Germany to resume teaching, going on to become one the largest higher education institutions in the country.

The modern Göttingen offers a wide range of degree programmes, particularly in the humanities, with almost all academic disciplines represented across its 13 faculties. It prioritises creativity, in particular, with students and faculty encouraged to engage in creative thinking as well as acquiring methodological knowledge.

The university’s profile is further enhanced by its partnerships with several local research partners, including the Göttingen Academy of Sciences, the German Aerospace Centre and five Max Planck Institutes, which work with the university to provide an alliance of collaboration in research and teaching.

Göttingen is itself a hub of culture and creativity, hosting many events and festivals throughout the year including the international Handel Festival, which celebrates German baroque music.

New York University Abu Dhabi Corporation

United Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi

Description Mubadala Arabian Center for Climate and Environmental Sciences (ACCESS) at New York University Abu Dhabi, seeks to recruit an Associate Research Scientist to investigate the molecular and genomic mechanisms underpinning the extraordinary heat tolerance of Arabian Gulf corals, the most thermally resilient corals on Earth. The successful candidate will lead an ambitious research program focused on understanding how individual corals and populations vary in their responses to heat stress. This work will involve the application of genomic and gene expression profiling, as well as eco-physiological assays, to reveal the mechanistic basis of thermal resilience. The position is uniquely placed to bridge fundamental molecular research with applied conservation through close collaboration with another postdoctoral researcher who is leading a selective breeding program for heat-tolerant corals. Together, these efforts will support the development of robust coral populations capable of withstanding intensifying climate-related stressors. Applicants must hold a PhD in biological sciences, molecular ecology, genetics, or a related field, completed by January 2024. They must also possess advanced SCUBA certification with demonstrated research-diving experience, as well as strong proficiency in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, and statistical analysis. Experience conducting coral heat-stress assays and a record of first-author publications relevant to the field are essential. Preferred qualifications include a driver’s license in the applicant’s home country, boat-operator certification, and scientific diver credentials such as AAUS certification. Additional assets include experience with other omics approaches or epigenetics, advanced coding skills in R or Python, and prior supervisory experience with students or research staff. For consideration, applicants need to submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae with full publication list, transcript, statement of research interests and three letters of reference, all in PDF format. If you have any questions, please email Kelly Bradham at kelly.bradham@nyu.edu. The terms of employment are very competitive and include housing and educational subsidies for children. Applications will be accepted immediately and candidates will be considered until the position is filled. To be considered, all applicants must submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae, transcript of degree, a one-page summary of research accomplishments and interests, and at least 2 letters of recommendation, all in PDF format. Durham University

United Kingdom, Durham

The Role and Department The Chemistry Department at Durham University is one of the very best Chemistry Departments in the UK with an outstanding reputation for excellence in teaching, research, and employability of our students. Ranked 21 in REF2021 in terms of grade point average, the Chemistry Department is a thriving environment for research as well as for career development. The Role Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in crystallisation and characterisation of molecular? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK's leading research-intensive universities? We are looking for an outstanding Research Fellow to join a research project based in the groups of Prof. Aurora J. Cruz-Cabeza and Prof. John Evans. The project is part of a new £7m EPSRC funded Programme Grant that brings together a team of researchers from the universities of Durham, Leeds and Manchester investigating the formation of Molecular Solid Solutions (MoSS). Solid solutions are created when atoms or ions of a dopant are incorporated within the crystal structure of a host. Even at minute quantities, this can significantly alter the properties of crystals. Although solid solutions in metals and inorganic materials are well-studied, little is known about systems where the host and dopants are small organic molecules (MoSS). There is huge potential of utilising MoSS for changing and modulating materials properties , such as solubilities, crystal polymorph, crystal sizes and shapes and rates of dissolution. The overall goal of the consortium is to develop and apply cutting-edge techniques in crystal synthesis, characterisation and modelling to study and generate a new understanding of MoSS. These advances will have applications across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and food industries. There are multiple opportunities to collaborate, take part in network events and undertake research placements within this project. You will have a PhD in Physical Sciences or a closely related field, and you will have a background in crystallisation and solid state characterisation. Knowledge of databases, and python coding is a must. The key responsibilities are to explore the crystallisation and characterisation of MoSS,. The successful candidate will be involved in the supervision of a PhD student during the duration of the position and will have significant of opportunities for career development. This post is fixed term for 36 months- the funding is available from 01/10/2025. The post-holder is employed to work on research/a research project which will be led by another colleague. Whilst this means that the post-holder will not be carrying out independent research in his/her own right, the expectation is that they will contribute to the advancement of the project, through the development of their own research ideas/adaptation and development of research protocols. Successful applicants will, ideally, be in post by 1st December 2026.
